Copper alloy Fragment of a Colchester-derivative hinged Dolphin Brooch with tubular wings (one lost); the underside of the remaining wing bears two shallow grooves; although cast in a single piece this feature appears to mimic the appearance of tubular wings on other brooches of this type, which often bear a seam line in this position. This brooch is a little larger than a most of the similar brooches reported from this location. The bow is decorated with a medial line of finely moulded zig-zag ornament, flanked by raised ribs running along the sides of the bow. The bow tapers toward…

Copper alloy. Small Colchester-derivative Dolphin Brooch with plain semi-tubular wings bearing moulded groove at each end, presumably masking a spring for fastening (now lost); this example lacks any trace of a hook to retain the chord. The bow has a markedly humped head, flat-ended where it meets the wings, and is of slightly angular section, bearing a medial rib with filed billeting decoration, closely flanked by a further pair of narrow ribs; the appearance is of atypically fine decoration. The bow tapers towards a plain catch-plate. One of several similar brooches from this locati…

Copper alloy Fragment of a Colchester-derivative Dolphin Brooch with tubular wings decorated with grooves imitating appearance of a spring, and slot for a hinged pin (probably lost). Copper alloy Fragment of a Colchester-derivative Dolphin Brooch with semi-tubular wings each bearing moulded decoration of three raised ribs decorated by transverse scoring, with hollows between; this may imitate the appearance of the spring (now lost) concealed beneath the wings. A hook protrudes from the head to engage the chord. The bow may also bear a fine medial groove, but appears otherwise plain; the lower half is lost. Blueish patches of colour appear on the bow, and in more limited patches between the ribs on one wing, suggesting the body of brooch may have been enamelled. Ab…

Copper alloy. Copper alloy. Fragment of Colchester-derivative Dolphin Brooch, either with tubular wings and stub of a pin, or alternatively with spring in semi-tubular wings, so whether this is an earlier or later Dolphin Brooch must remain uncertain; either stub of pin or a hook remains at crest of bow. The underside of bow also bears a thin projection, perhaps connecting with the catch-plate, which is lost along with the lower part of bow. Heavily corroded. One of several similar brooches from this location. Length: 34.30mm, Width: 23.62mm, Thickness (at wings/spring): 8.97mm, Weight: 12.41gms.…

Copper alloy Fragment of a small plate brooch, possibly representing a fish (Hattatt 1987, fig. 77) or an elongated shield of Celtic or Germanic style (the finder’s suggestion). A deeply incised compass-drawn ring and dot lies towards one end, with a deeply incised border extending around all extant edges; a lug at the other end may be stub of the catch-plate. Though these brooches were often enamelled, and the relief decoration would hold this well, no trace of colorant now remains. Suggested date: Roman, 100-250.
