Cast copper alloy ansate brooch of the middle to late Early Medieval period, of Weetch's type II.Aiii. The bow of the object is D-shaped in section and the sub-circular, disc-shaped terminals are rectangular in section. The terminals have engraved cells showing an encircled cruciform shape. These were probably intended to hold enamel or paste decoration. The reverse of the object is undecorated. The reverse of one disc-shaped terminal carries the surviving fragment of the pin lug, which is set transversely (perpendicular to the pin). The other disc-shaped terminal carries the catchpla…

Early medieval brooch; Incomplete cast copper alloy disc brooch of probable 9th century date. The brooch is formed of a flat, circular plate cast with a design with roundels and indications of interlace. The artefact consists of two fragments of the plate which fit together, one of which seems more worn than the other. Unfortunately the back of the fragments cannot be closely examined due to the adhesive which has been used to hold them together, but there is no indication that any of the pin or pin mounting survives. From the existing fragment it can be postulated that the original…

Incomplete copper alloy small long brooch. The brooch has a rectangular headplate decorated with punched crescent and dot motifs. The dots are not punched themselves, rather the punch mark is a plano-convex stamp which creates the effect of a raised dot in the centre. The bow is arched in cross-section and profile, faceted at top and bottom and decorated down the centre with a row of punched circles. There is a pair of incised chevrons decorating the bow at the top and the bottom, just in from the facets. There are two small square plates below the bow. The lower one is faceted. …

A cast copper-alloy disc brooch of the late Early Medieval period, probably the 10th century. The brooch has a border of square beads with a beast (perhaps a stylised lion) in the centre. The beast is facing left looking back over its shoulder. The beast has a scaled neck, probably a mane, and a thick raised tail, and four legs with three toes each. The reverse of the brooch has an integrally case hinge fitting and catch plate. The hinge fitting is semi-circular with a rectangular perforation and bears iron corrosion from the hinge of the pin. The catch plate is a simple hook. Both fe…

Possible fantail foot from an Anglo-Saxon small long brooch. The brooch foot is flat, triangular and broken at the top. There is no decoration on the surface and no catchplate on the reverse. The absence of a catchplate makes this more likely to be Anglo-Saxon, since Roman bow and fantail brooches have catchplates on the reverse of the fantail.

The outer perimeters of all three fragments are damaged, however one piece is much narrower that the other two and has a perimeter decoration that does not match them either. Fragment 1. A curved, flat section frame with a rivet hole at one end. The frame is decorated with two perimeter bands of punched half-circles. Probably the same brooch as fragment 2. 45.69mm x 9.58mm x 1.44mm. Late Early Medieval or early Medieval pewter disc brooch. The brooch is circular and is decorated similar to the reverses of the coins of William II, specifically the 'cross-voided' type (circa 1092-1095). The decoration comprises a voided cross pattee with annulet in centre over a cross annulettee. Instead of a legend there is a perimeter of hatches. The reverse of the brooch has two crescent-shaped lugs each with a hole through the centre aligned with a slightly concave channel. The pin mechanism is missing. The surface of the lugs are decorated with grooves whereas the reverse of t…

A very detailed and well preserved Anglo-Saxon disc brooch with Style II animal ornamentation. The brooch is circular, flat and has a narrow rim on the front enclosing the decoration. An early Anglo-Saxon copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 6th Century. The brooch has a trapezoidal head, which is very damaged and corroded around the edges. The corroded remains of the lug can be seen. The brooch has a high arch, with some incised decoration. The lower part of the bow is lozenge shaped and flat. The foot and catchplate have broken off. Only the stump of the catchplate remains. Similar to an example in Hattatt, p376, Fig: 235.

Two fragments of what was probably the same Anglo-Saxon copper alloy annular brooch. The fragments are flat and circular. One is very worn and no decoration is visible, however decoration is visible on the other fragment. The decoration comprises pairs of transverse lines dividing the frame into smaller panels. Though only a portion remains, it is probable that it comprised a repeated pattern of two smaller panels with a longer one between. The surviving longer panel is decorated with six punched circles.
