Almost complete cast silver/copper-alloy radiate-headed brooch of early-medieval date. It has a semi-circular headplate with raised outer border, and within this two raised lines following the outline; in the centre there is a semi-circular zone of vertical lines. The brooch probably originally had five baluster-shaped projections with moulded terminals but only two incomplete ones remain, with the rest of the perimeter of the headplate being damaged. The rectangular bow is wide with a shallow arch just below the radiate head and expands towards the bottom. The front is moulded with a…

Description: A fragment of flat decorated gilded silver. It appears to have been irregularly cut, most probably from a lozenge-shaped brooch. The surviving edge has two circular lobes projecting side by side from the corner of the lozenge, each decorated with a central raised dot and a pair of concentric ridges. Of the two remaining edges, one is ragged and the other is cleanly cut. The interior of the plate is decorated with a linear border made up of a narrow outer and a wide inner ridge with traces of punched circles on it, forming the angle of the lozenge. Within this is worn re…

A copper alloy brooch decorated in a fusion of the Borre and Jellinge styles, possibly a Viking import, dating from 900-950 AD. The brooch is domed and in two parts; a flat backplate and a slightly domed, openwork front. The reverse carries the remains of a double mount for a hinged pin and a catch plate, together with an additional lug at right angles to the pin, which was probably perforated, but is also broken. The hinge and pin are also missing. The openwork upper portion is made up of a single profile beast with a thin, intertwined body, making a roughly triangular shape and with…

Fragment of an Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy cruciform brooch dating to the sixth century. Only part of the zoomorphic foot survives. In cross-section the fragment is arched and broken at either end. At the top the foot has a series of transverse ribs. The lower of these curves into the centre to form the forehead of the animal. Either side of this is a large pellet indicating the eyes. A shallow ridge runs down the centre of the snout to the break. On the reverse a small portion of the catchplate is visible at the top.

Two fragments of an Anglo-Saxon square-headed brooch, made of silver, partly gilded and inlaid with niello. The headplate and foot are present however the bow is missing. The breaks are jagged and appear to be of relatively recent occurance. The rectangular head plate is missing much of its lower edge. It is decorated with a raised three-sided frame containing two rows of niello-inlaid triangular cells. Within the frame is a panel of Style I ornament, with further Style I animals outside the frame. On the reverse of the headplate is a single pierced lug. The gilding does not continu…

A fragment of an Early Medieval Great Square-Headed brooch dating from the late 5th or 6th century. The fragment is probably the terminal of the footplate of the brooch because on the reverse is a central rib which probably extends from the base of the catchplate. The terminal is sub-circular in plan with a decorated front and undecorated reverse. The base of the footplate also survives. This flares from the top of the circular terminal. The break is patinated. Some gilding remains on the front, which is decorated with chip-carved grooves on the base of the footplate. There is a V …

Copper alloy Cruciform Brooch fragment. Possible side or top knob from a cruciform brooch (finder suggests). This object is cast in the round as a very slightly waisted piece, with a scar indicating its attachment to the body of the brooch by a copper alloy pin. The majority of brooch knobs, as illustrated by Reichstein (1975), are more prominently waisted than this example. However, northern Lincolnshire provides examples, as from Cleatham, where this trait becomes less conspicuous, perhaps a result of local Anglo-Saxon manufacture of this form of brooch. Suggested date: Earl…

Fragment of a cast, copper-alloy cruciform brooch of 5th-6th century date. The fragment consists of the side- or topknob from the head of a cruciform brooch. The knob is half-round in section with a hollow back. The knob has 3 sections: a base collar that is trapezoidal in plan; the central body of the knob, sub-trapezoidal in plan; and a narrow spatulate/crescent terminal. The break at the base of the collar indicates the object was cast integral with the rest of the brooch, rather than made separately and attached.

Cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon brooch with identical triangular terminals, one a head and one a foot, both flat, undecorated and triangular with the apexes towards the bow. The long side edges of the head and foot are slightly incurved, the top and bottom (the bases of the triangles) slightly outcurved. The bow is relatively wide, triangular in cross-section in the centre and has a short rectangular-section panel at both top and bottom, creating a pair of small triangular facets at either end. On the reverse of each terminal is a narrow longitudinal projection, one (probably the catchp…

Copper alloy cruciform brooch fragment. Cast foot of a narrow cruciform brooch with stylised horse nostrils at end and three moulded ribs above it. The object is of plano-convex section, with a flat back retaining the stub of a catch-plate. Abraded overall. The narrow form may suggest this object to lie earlier in the sequence of cruciform brooches, while its condition suggests it was broken in antiquity. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 475-500. Length: 39.32mm, Width: 8.8mm, Thickness: 3.42mm, Weight: 6.39g.

Copper alloy Brooch fragment. Cast foot of a cruciform brooch. On the display face prominently moulded eyes are set between heavy brow ridges; the end of the brooch foot is turned up, whether by heat or impact damage is uncertain. On the reverse, the stub of the lower end of a possibly triangular catch-plate remains. Abraded overall, including on fracture surfaces, suggesting the object was damaged in antiquity. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600. Length: 31.31mm, Width: 14.15mm, Thickness (clear of catch-plate): 2.85mm, Weight: 7.93gms.

Copper alloy Brooch fragment. Cast foot from a small cruciform brooch. A foot derived from a pelta form, but with more rounded edges, joins the flat end of bow at a moulded step. Closely-spaced punched dots follow the edges of the fragment, which has been detached from the rest of the brooch below the position of the catch-plate. A fine and even patina extends over all surfaces except this fracture, suggesting relatively recent breakage. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 500-600. Copper alloy Brooch fragment. Cast head-plate of a cruciform brooch. The stub of a pin lug remains on reverse. The object is bent and torn towards the lower part of head, and no surface detail remains, possibly due to burning or other trauma in antiquity. Copper alloy with blue enamel Brooch fragment (as kindly identified by finder). Cast flat fragment of a flat plate with the stub of a catch-plate or pin lug on the reverse. The plate is gently waisted, with one oval end bearing a central decorative boss. The display face bears curvilinear decoration and a raised border defining a field occupied by the degraded traces of blue enamel. The finder cites parallels on display in Lincoln, holding this to be an end fragment of a similar brooch; these suggestions have yet to be confirmed by The Collection. The use of curvilinear dec…

Copper alloy and silver Brooch. Disc Brooch. Slightly concavo-convex silver disc decorated with five circular compartments of interlocking compass-drawn decoration, attached by four silver rivets of diameter 1.4mm and length 2.5mm to a similarly concavo-convex cast copper alloy disc. Each strand of interlace bears an off-centre incised line, probably to emphasise its course; the rivets are sunk between these lines where they intersect. A central countersunk hole of about 2mm diameter appears integral to the facing, and perhaps to both elements. Diagonal tooling or polishing marks ap…

In September 2003 and November 2004, two joining fragments of a late 9th-century Anglo-Saxon silver openwork disc brooch were found at Heckington, Lincolnshire. Description: Within a circular shape in a beaded border, the pattern cut out is that of an equal-armed cross with double cusped expanded arms. The cut-out 'armpits' would have been embellished by an additional pattern, of which only a volute on the left-hand side of fragment (A) survives. Fragment (A) corresponds to the expanded arms of the cross, and is decorated with vegetation motifs at the attenuated spandrels, and wi…
