Almost complete cast silver/copper-alloy radiate-headed brooch of early-medieval date. It has a semi-circular headplate with raised outer border, and within this two raised lines following the outline; in the centre there is a semi-circular zone of vertical lines. The brooch probably originally had five baluster-shaped projections with moulded terminals but only two incomplete ones remain, with the rest of the perimeter of the headplate being damaged. The rectangular bow is wide with a shallow arch just below the radiate head and expands towards the bottom. The front is moulded with a…

Description: A fragment of flat decorated gilded silver. It appears to have been irregularly cut, most probably from a lozenge-shaped brooch. The surviving edge has two circular lobes projecting side by side from the corner of the lozenge, each decorated with a central raised dot and a pair of concentric ridges. Of the two remaining edges, one is ragged and the other is cleanly cut. The interior of the plate is decorated with a linear border made up of a narrow outer and a wide inner ridge with traces of punched circles on it, forming the angle of the lozenge. Within this is worn re…

Two fragments of an Anglo-Saxon square-headed brooch, made of silver, partly gilded and inlaid with niello. The headplate and foot are present however the bow is missing. The breaks are jagged and appear to be of relatively recent occurance. The rectangular head plate is missing much of its lower edge. It is decorated with a raised three-sided frame containing two rows of niello-inlaid triangular cells. Within the frame is a panel of Style I ornament, with further Style I animals outside the frame. On the reverse of the headplate is a single pierced lug. The gilding does not continu…

In September 2003 and November 2004, two joining fragments of a late 9th-century Anglo-Saxon silver openwork disc brooch were found at Heckington, Lincolnshire. Description: Within a circular shape in a beaded border, the pattern cut out is that of an equal-armed cross with double cusped expanded arms. The cut-out 'armpits' would have been embellished by an additional pattern, of which only a volute on the left-hand side of fragment (A) survives. Fragment (A) corresponds to the expanded arms of the cross, and is decorated with vegetation motifs at the attenuated spandrels, and wi…

A silver-gilt fragment, possibly from a late Anglo-Saxon disc brooch. The fragment can be read as part of an animal with only the front leg, shoulder and curve at the junction of the neck and back remaining. A strand of interlace can be seen running behind the possible raised front leg which ends against a simple frame. The animal is rendered freely in a style reminiscent of the chip carving of the early Anglo Saxon period. All edges apart from the one delineating the lower part of the neck and back are torn. The width of the fragment is 15mm.

The previous two fragments were reported as 2004T162, recorded on the PAS database at LIN-9B7487, and included in Weetch's (2013) catalogue as no. 591. Description: Fragment of a silver disc brooch. About one fifth of the original object is preserved, with remains of one boss on the front, surrounded by probable iron corrosion products, perhaps the remains of the filling of the boss. The rivet stump from the boss is visible on the back. The mount was engraved with Trewhiddle-style floral ornament, which reta…

Fragment of an Early Medieval Irish penannular brooch, silver gilt bearing incised decoration consisting of double spiral, a zone of double chevron ribs set within two ribs and a number of gently rounded plain panels. The back is flat and undecorated. This fragment is best paralleled by two plates fixed to the back of the brooch from Killamery, Co. Kilkenny (Youngs, 1989, 99-100, Catalogue Number 80). These show the some decorative element as seen on the Torksey find, the spiral (which is only a single ring on Killamery) the herring-bone like chevron and the plain areas. The Killamery…

An Early Medieval silver-gilt small square-headed brooch dating to the 5th-6th century AD. Only the footplate lobe and a small portion of the footplate has survived. The lobe is sub-circular with the outer border decorated with two circumferential rows of stamped triangles, with the points facing each other. This decoration is much worn along one side and the lower aspect. Within this border is a central humanoid en-face Style I head or 'mask', somewhat degenerative. Description: Gilded silver knob from a radiate-headed brooch, in the shape of an animal's head, perhaps a boar. The underside is flat and hollowed, with no gilding. A flat surface at right angles to the reverse forms the back of the head, and bears a low lug at the top, 4.1mm wide by 1.5mm deep. At the base of this, a thicker (5.7mm by 3.3mm) and more ragged stub may be the remains of an iron post passing through the flat end; there is much iron staining in this area. The animal's head begins with a low ridged collar which is topped by a longitudinal groove. Beyond is a wide groo…

From (2104) is an incomplete cast silver strip brooch with lozengiform plate. The pin, which would have been integral to the brooch and drawn out from it, appears to have been broken off and replaced by a copper alloy attachment; this pin, too, has broken off. The looped-up pin catch, at the opposite end of the brooch, survives. The front of the brooch is decorated with a zoomorphic design in the Trewhiddle Style, comprising a pair of quadrupeds set either side of a central domed boss. The creatures have drilled eyes, elongated ears and open jaws with lolling tongues. The are…

An incomplete silver 'knotenfibula' dating to the late Iron Age. The pin and spring of the brooch are missing and the catch plate is also broken and missing. The bow has a diamond shaped cross section. At its highest point, close to the end of the brooch where the spring was originally, there is a circular boss between two ring mouldings. This boss is the defining feature for these types of brooches. The original catch plate, which held the pin in place when worn was decorated with two large perforations to produce a delicate decorative shape. The piece of brooch recovered is 87.9 mm

The object is a silver penny of the Short Cross coinage which has been converted into a brooch. The coin was originally a silver penny of Short Cross class 5bi, issued in 1205 under King John. The moneyer was Pieres operating at Durham: the reverse inscription +PIERES.ON.DVR is virtually complete. The coin would have been produced to the established standard of the English medieval coinage, over 90% fine silver. The penny has been substantially altered and it could no longer be a functioning coin. The central section with the main design (king's head on the front, short double cross…

A small medieval silver annular brooch with twisted frame. The frame is decorated with a line of pellets between the ridges. The pin is intact though missing its terminal. As this find was made before the Treasure Act 1996 came into force, it would have fallen under Treasure Trove legislation. In order to qualify as Treasure an object had to be believed to have been buried with the intent of recovery. This brooch is likely to be the product of a casual loss, and therefore does not meet the criteria for Treasure.
