Corroded and incomplete Wirral type Roman brooch. The headloop is missing. The head is stepped up to the headloop. The brooch is a hinged example but the pin and bar are missing. The upper bow has a panel which is split into three vertical strips. These would have been filled with alternating squares of coloured enamel. Most of this is gone now but traces of orange enamel survive. The bow has broken just below the knee so the foot and most of the lower half of the bow is missing. There is a circular boss at the knee of the bow. The brooch is very corroded and has an uneven surface. It…

Incomplete enamelled copper alloy dragonesque brooch of Early Roman date, c.75-175. The main body of the brooch is sub-oval. It terminates in a point at one end where the tail would have originally been, while the other curves round the main body to form a neck. The neck is a figure of eight. The form of which creates two similar sized openwork circles. In between the two circles is the eye which sits next the snout/beak. The eye is represented by a raised rounded protrusion, which sits in a perfect circular recess. The brooch is decorated with raised geometric ornamentation with trac…

The curving bow springs from the centre of a circular head. The head is hollow backed suggesting the presence of a spring mechanism. A possible trace of a head loop is visible on the top of the head. The bow is decorated with two long panels containing alternate blocks of coloured enamel of which traces of a pale green enamel survive. The junction of the bow and the leg is stepped. The straight leg has a convex front surface and terminates in a foot knob. The triangular catchplate extends for half the length of the leg.
