A copper alloy Early Medieval domed disc brooch. The brooch has a diameter of 26.1mm and is 8.5mm thick. It has a plain border and a design in relief of a Jellinge-style animal with interlace. On the reverse the double pin lug and catchplate survive, and there is another projecting lug which is too corroded to see if it was pierced. The pin does not survive. The brooch is in very good condition and has a deep green patina with lighter areas of slight corrosion. The brooch probably dates from the later part of the Early Medieval period; 850 - 1066 AD. Jane Kershaw has identified thi…

Original identification (with the object type 'Personal Ornament'): Copper-alloy pendant, possibly of a 'Thor's Hammer' type. The object comprises a flat-sectioned, axe-shaped pendant. There is a perforation with iron inclusions at the top of the narrow 'axe base', this being the area located behind the flared edge of the axehead. The face is decorated with semicircles with dots in the centre. The reverse is not decorated. Helen Geake writes: An alternative identification for this object is that it is the repaired foot of a small-long brooch. The foot may have broken off, been ti…

Cast copper alloy brooch, probably the incomplete terminal of a cruciform brooch. The object comprises a zoomorphic terminal showing a stylised snout and eyes. Coming up from this terminal are two broken tags showing probable moulded bands of ridge and pellet decoration. Moving further up the central body of the brooch terminal are two further broken tags, one of which is more extended; this is right-angled in plan, and may once have connected to the tag below it, creating an openwork motif on the brooch.

A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon long Brooch, consisting of the curved bow, with part of what is probably the catchplate on the reverse. It consists of a roughly rectangular plate (4.6mm thick) curved in section and broken at both ends. Each end has a flat panel and there is a fragment of flat footplate or headplate at one end. This has a ridge on the reverse, right next to the start of the bow, which is a more common place to find a catchplate; this would identify the flat area as part of the footplate. Decoration on the bow consists of a simple horizontal ridge and two horizontal dividi…

A cast copper alloy knop from a 6th Century Anglo-Saxon brooch. Only the single knop survives. The knop is D-shaped in profile and has become detached from the main body of the brooch. The profile of the knop is very elaborate. It is formed from a double collar, which then tapers inwards, before tapering out again into a cone, the cone then terminates with a collar. There is a central circular perforation through the centre of the knop. The fragment is worn and is a pitted mid brownish-green colour. Similar brooch knops can be seen in West et al, 1998, p90 and p240, fig: 122, 7-11.

A fragmentary copper alloy Early Medieval Great Square Headed Brooch of which only the bow survives. The fragment is rectangular and arched. It has a central vertical ridge with a circular boss in the middle. Chip carved decoration is present on either side of the central ridge though corrosion and dirt obscure the details of the pattern which is in Anglo Saxon Style I animal art style. There are traces of gilding at the top and bottom of the fragment on the front. There appears to be a repair in one corner of the fragment. A cast copper alloy cruciform brooch of the 6th or 7th century. This is a fine piece, apparently well-made and in good condition. The brooch has a good dark green patina. The brooch was incomplete until recently, when the finders located the ‘head’. Although in two pieces, it appears that the brooch is complete (unless there were side mounting on the head, still lost). The brooch is very regular in shape, and slightly convex in section through the body (the reverse is slightly hollow along its length). The head is a rough square, with decoration set in from the slightly concave si…

A copper alloy side knob from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5th - 6th Century. The knob is flat on the underside and domed on the upper side, semi circular in section. The knob consists of a rounded terminal end and a collar incised with two horizontal lines. At the attaching end there is a projecting copper alloy plate in the upper half of the section, below this there is the remains of the corroded iron pin which would have secured the knob to the wing. A copper alloy side knob from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5th - 6th Century. The knob consists of a spherical terminal end and projecting stem. The knob is circular in section and has a narrow perforation which passes throughout the length of the object. On the reverse the stem is open and the inside of the hollow can be seen. Whether this is intended or it has been caused by damage is unknown as the entire knob is heavily worn. The surface is mid greyish-green. This knob is part of an Anglo-Saxon Cruciform brooch dating to the 5th to 6th Century. See: Hattatt, p372/3.
