Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD
The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and foot (with a surviving length of 42.4mm and a weight of 12.1g). The rear of the head is concave to accommodate the missing spring which was secured around a singly pierced lug (9.7mm long, perforation diameter 2.2mm). There is a small knop at the top of the apex, possibly the remnants of an integral pin to help position the swivel chain loop and prevent the chain loop from falling out of line. The head is circular, almost disc like (with a length of 13.5…

Roman copper alloy brooch of T-shaped type dating to the 1st or 2nd century AD
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin, catch plate and foot. (surviving length of 30.2mm and a weight of 4.6g). The missing pin was hinged within tubular wings (with a total length of 13.1mm and width of 4.5mm). The wings are decorated with a groove and rib near the tips. An integral chain-loop extends vertically outwards from the top of the bow. The upper bow is of D-shaped section (width at head 8.4mm and a length of 20.8mm)) and with straight sides that converge slightly to a rounded button with kn…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy two-piece trumpet brooch. Only part of the bow and head survive; the spring, chord, pin, lower half of the bow and catch-plate are missing. The surface of the brooch is heavily corroded and much original surface detail has been lost. The reverse of the brooch's head contains a perforated lug, which would have presumably accommodated an axial bar. The upper part of the lug apparently extends above the back of the head. The decoration on the middle of the bow consists of poorly defined triple mouldings rather than a typical "acanthus" motif. No other deco…

Probably a Romano-British, copper alloy Colchester derivative brooch of the Polden Hill type with flat wing ends. The brooch contains a bilateral spring of fourteen coils. A simple rearward-facing hook on the head of the brooch presumably accommodated a now missing, overhead chord. A copper alloy axis bar passes through the coils of the spring and is held by pierced circular plates at the ends of the wings (cf. type L Hattatt 1982, 49, table 2). The wings are semi-cylindrical and both accommodate and hide from view the spring mechanism. The wings are decorated with moulded ribs set bo…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date
The brooch is heavily-corroded and incomplete, missing the spring, catch-plate and lower leg (with a surviving length of 47.2mm, a surviving depth of 17.7mm and a weight of 10.9g). The missing spring was secured around a central lug on the rear of the head, now lost. The head is oval (13.8mm long and 10.1mm wide). Corrosion has removed all the detail from the head, there is the suggestion of a horizontal moulding at the apex, possibly indicating the presence of a chain-loop. The bow narrows before wid…

Roman copper alloy brooch of Polden Hill type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date.
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head and upper bow only (with a surviving length of 19.5mm, a surviving depth of 10.0mm and a weight of 5.2g). The missing spring was secured between perforated lateral lugs, now lost and the chord was tensioned with a lug on the head, now also lost. The surviving part of the wings (with a surviving width of 16.2mm) were decorated with grooves adjacent to the bow. There is the suggestion of curved mouldings on the sides of the bow at the head. The upper …

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Polden Hill type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head (with a surviving length of 19.3mm, a surviving depth of 12.6mm and a weight of 7.0g). The copper alloy spring remains in place, secured within semi–cylindrical wings (with a width of 17.9mm and a diameter of 7mm) and with the copper alloy axis bar secured through perforations in the end lugs. The chord appears to have been tensioned by a hook at the head. The terminals appear to have been expanded but are now heavily corroded. The sides of the …

Roman copper alloy brooch of enamelled T-shaped type of T111 and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The cast brooch is near-complete, missing the pin and chain-loop (with a surviving length of 56.4mm, a depth of 18.6mm and a weight of 10.5g). The missing pin was hinged within tubular wings of D-shaped section, flat at the front (18.5mm wide and 5.3mm x 5.0mm section). There is no surviving decoration on the wings. Above the head is the damaged remains of an integral chain-loop (of 6.4mm external diameter and 3.6mm internal diameter). The head is flat and projects forward to the near-…

A fragmentary cast copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch of AD 100-175. The brooch is represented by the head and upper bow (with a remaining overall length of 46.4mm, weight 20.72g) with the spring mechanism, pin, lower bow/leg and catch-plate missing in old damage.
The head is sub-oval in plan with a small knop on the apex (21.4mm tall x 16.8mm wide) to accommodate a perforated lug on the reverse, now damaged (4.8mm wide x 16.2mm tall, internal diameter of surviving perforation 3.1mm), which would have held the spring mechanism. Concentric recessed rings on either side of the head…

Open frame annular brooch, probably of 14th century date. The cast frame incorporates six collets, two each end of the pin and two opposite each other midway along the frame. The collets contained blue and white glass stones, originally domed. The four colleets around the pin alternating between blue and white, and the two frame collets are white. The frame has a ‘D’ shaped profile and is plain, except for where it is expanded at each collet and around each end of the pin housing. The separate pin is attached through a drilled hole in the frame and two of the collets restrict the p…
