Two separate pieces of an unidentified, lead alloy artefact, of uncertain date, probably AD 500 - 1800. It is possible that they are part of the head of an Early Medieval great square headed brooch, or a model for one, dating from AD 500 - 570. The two pieces do not join, and it is uncertain what shape it was originally. It seems most likely to have been a rectangular or square plaque. The reverse is plain and flat. The upper face is decorated in a geometric design, probably executed in cast relief. The break is patinated but not particularly worn.
The larger piece is roughly squ…

A copper alloy Roman trumpet brooch. The brooch is 52.2mm long, 21mm wide and 15.2mm thick. It is complete. The brooch has an oval trumpet mouth head which is decorated by a faint central ridge with an oval "eye-shaped" groove on each side. There is an acanthus button round the centre of the bow which continues round the back of the bow though it is not so neatly moulded on the reverse. It has three petals above and below a central band. There is a triple collar above and below the button. The lower bow is decorated with typical side-grooves and the foot is discoid and has three tiers…

Incomplete cast copper alloy Headstud brooch, dating to the early Roman period. The wings are rectangular and have a cylindrical housing for the (probably) copper alloy axis bar on the reverse. The pin and the suspension loop at the top of the head are missing but ferrous corrosion indicates that the pin was iron. The wings are decorated with lozenge shaped cells containing blue enamel and triangular cells which are empty. The bow is rectangular in cross-section. There is a ridge (a pseudo forward hook) above the head stud. The stud is oval with white decayed enamel and a central circ…

The wings are short and undecorated. The wings have a triangular section and a hinge mechanism has been built into the head, it is slightly lop-sides. The hinge mechanism has been damaged, resulting in the loss of the hinge and pin. The bow is long, thin and tapers to the foot (now badly bent). It is undecorated. The foot is rounded and has the catchplate behind, now badly damaged. The bro…

A section of a cast, copper alloy Roman brooch, probably of the Aucissa derivative type, dating from 43-75AD. The brooch has a hinged pin mechanism but the pin does not survive. The bow is cast with three raised, lateral ribs; a broad central rib and a narrower rib along each side. There are a number of small, transverse grooves incised into each rib. On each side of the bow are four small, equidistantly spaced knops, those on one side being largely worn away. At the upper end, the bow tapers to a narrow neck before broadening out into two short wings which are hollow to take the pin …

A fragment of a cast, copper alloy Roman plate brooch dating from 80 - 250AD. The brooch is crescent shaped and has an elaborately decorated front surface which retains blue enamel in several cells, notably in three triangular cells on the outer edge of the crescent. The decoration is divided into different sections: in the centre of the brooch is a panel containing lozenges and around the curved bottom edge of the brooch a border of interlocking triangles. The right-hand point of the crescent has broken away. On the reverse of the brooch in the centre of the curved outside edge of th…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch, a Colchester derivative hinged type cf Mackreth 2011, CD H 17, Plate 65, dating from the early Roman period, about AD 43 - 120. The remaining portion consists of the bow and two short, tubular wings containing the remains of a copper alloy axis bar. There is a slot to accommodate a copper alloy, hinged pin, only a small portion of which remains in place - just the back of the hinge loop.
A projection from the top of the head may be the remains of an integral headloop. Each of the wings is decorated with two transverse grooves. The upper b…

An incomplete copper alloy Roman brooch dating from AD 150 - 250. It is a P shaped brooch made using the Armbrustfibel technique. The brooch has a narrow bow made from a single piece of copper alloy with the foot bending backwards and upwards to form the catchplate, which then tapers to a wire which wraps round the base of the bow. The curved bow has a distinct 'P' shaped profile and is D shaped in cross section. The upper bow has an arris along the centre, with a flat square panel at the base. This panel is decorated with an incised cross saltire. Below this is the coiled wire from t…

A fragment of a copper alloy Roman hinged headstud brooch dating from AD 75 - 200. All that remains is the head and wings. The pin, bow, catchplate and foot are all missing. The wings are sub rectangular with rounded ends possibly due to corrosion and wear. The front surfaces are decorated with faded red enamel surrounding a vertical row of three three blue enamel lozenges. There is an old break at the point where the separate headstud would have been, and the stud is also missing. The wings hid a tubular housing for the axis bar. The bar survives, but is detached. An unusual copper alloy Roman brooch. It is a bow brooch, but very short, and has mouldings which are suggestive of both fly brooches and phallic symbols. It may be a trumpet headed variety, but the head is very thick and rounded, and is not a clear trumpet mouth. The head is decorated with an arched line which divides the plain area above from a stippled area below. There is a transverse concave groove across the top of the bow, and the rest of the bow is decorated with curved lines which are far apart at the top, and close together at the base. The area between the lines is stippled…
