Cast copper alloy brooch. The bow is similar in design to strip-bow brooches and native copies af Aucissa brooches (see R Hattatt,2000, A Visual Catalogue of Richard Hattatt's Brooches, pages 318-319) . At the top are the two wings which are curled over a short copper alloy axis bar for a hinged pin arrangement. There is a large notch between the wings. The pin is attached and is as large as the bow. It has a flared head to act as a tensioning stop. The shaft of the pin is circular sectioned. The pin appears to be of a slightly different alloy and seems to be too large for the bow, su…

Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is…

A fragment of a copper-alloy Rosette or Thistle type brooch of mid 1st century AD date (Hattatt 1982: 98). The upper surface of the plate has two raised rims, close to the outer edge. At the bottom of the reverse side of the plate is a vertical protrusion, which probably represents part of the catchplate or foot section. The piece measures 22.2mm long, 17.9mm wide and 6.9mm thick.
