Complete, and well preserved with little sign of corrosion, it is now in five pieces, two of which are detached pieces of the iron pin, the other three being the bow with the knob on top, the wings and a detached part of the left-hand knob. The technique used to make the brooch was as a single casting for the foot and bow and the knob on the latter. The wings are in fact a hexagonal tube made from sheet metal which housed the iron axis bar for the hinged pin and to which was attached, at each end, a knob of quasi-onion shape rising from a beaded ridge. The knob on the bow is of the sa…

2008 T90: Two silver terminals from a Roman brooch. British Museum Report: Two silver terminals, probably from the cross-bar of a crossbow or 'P'-shaped brooch. The terminals consist of sheet silver wrapped around the copper-alloy cross-bar pin. The terminals are hexagonal in section with moulded collars and elongated knobbed ends. Silver Roman trumpet brooch fragment Date: 1st - 2nd Century A fragment of a silver trumpet brooch, dating from 75-175 AD. All that survives is the central section of the bow which features the acanthus moulding. The head and upper bow have broken off, therefore exposing the hollow section of the upper bow. Around this area is a wide collar that goes right the way around the brooch. It also has a thinner collar above and below it. The acanthus moulding then begins; it is formed from a lozenge shaped section, with three 'leaves' flaring outward and down at the top and upward from…
