A copper-alloy and enamelled Dragonesque brooch dating from the Early Roman period. The brooch is 33.2mm long, 18.5mm wide and 4.4mm thick. The foot is missing but the rest of the brooch is in very good condition. There is red enamel on the “ears”, blue enamel in the centre of the “eye” with a ring of damaged, possibly originally red enamel round it. The “chin” is joined to the body on the reverse, and the neck is particularly narrow. The surviving loop of the pin is still in situ round the neck of the brooch, but the pin itself is missing. The body is also decorated with e…

A copper alloy Headstud brooch from the early Roman period. The brooch is almost complete with just part of the pin, the headloop and the turnover of the catchplate missing. The brooch is 58.2mm long, 23.1mm wide and 13.9mm thick. It has a sprung pin with five coils of the spring on each side of the central spring loop. The loop continues on to the head of the brooch where it forms a narrow crest which stands proud of the head, leaving an arch underneath. Only about quarter of the length of the pin survives. The ends of the pin axel are damaged and it is presumed that originally they …

A copper alloy Roman bow brooch which probably dates from the first century AD. The brooch is 38.2mm long, 19.5mm wide and 6.9mm thick. It may be a Dolphin or Hod Hill type. The brooch has a gently curving bow which is decorated with two vertical grooves which are filled with a reddish material likely to be a form of corroded metal. It has short tapering wings which are also striped, but considerably worn. The head of the brooch projects back beyond the wings. The projecting area is thin and rectangular, and is moulded into two horizontal bands. There is a notch in the end which is pr…

Only the head of the brooch survives and the spring and pin are missing. There appears to be a central zig-zag line of decoration down the centre of the bow, but much of the patina is chipped and corroded, hiding most of the details. The brooch has short wings which appear not to be decorated. It is 20.6mm long, 20.2mm wide and 10.4mm thick. The wings are semi-cylindrical with closed ends which are pierced to take the axis bar of …

No details of the head can be made out; however, there is red enamel present on either end of the head. The centre of the body has a lattice design, with three central lozenges filled with yellow enamel. Either side of the lozenges is a row of triangles, which are filled with red enamel. Probably the end of a copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The fragment represents a stylised animal head. The head of the animal is decorated with five linear grooves and there is a large sub-circular hole which may represent an eye. Beyond the hole are two protrusions with rounded ends, which together may represent a mouth. Below the head is a curving protrusion, probably representing the animal's neck. The brooch is broken at this point, but would probably have extended into an S-shape, terminating in another animal head. The reverse …

Probably the end of a copper alloy Dragonesque brooch, dating from the mid-first to late second centuries. The fragment probably represents a stylised animal head, although no details of the animal can be distinguished. The fragment is trefoil - one lobe is domed and the other two have a thin, curved rib along the centre. There is no other decoration, and the reverse is flat and undecorated. This fragment probably formed the terminal to an S-shaped brooch, with another animal head at the other terminal. The break is extremely worn. The fragment is 17.3mm long and 12.6mm wide. A simila…

A copper alloy Roman fibular brooch which is 35.4mm long, 21.1mm wide and 15.3mm thick. The brooch has a simple tapering bow which appears not to be decorated though it is chipped in places.
