A complete Post Medieval silver annular brooch. The brooch is made up of a slightly convex silver sheet with striated decoration only around the base of the pin. On the back, maker's mark MC. The diameter is 22.5mm, the thickness is 3.1mm and the weight is 2.91g. Without the mark one might be tempted to think this artefact late medieval, but the form of the mark suggests a 16th Century date or later, though the mark is not recorded in Pickford (ed) of Jackson for this century. A complete Post-Medieval silver annular brooch from the sixteenth century onwards. Maker's mark on underside of frame. Length: 28.8mm; width: 23.3; thickness: 4.9mm; weight: 2.74g. Treasure case no. 2009 T48. The frame, now misshapen, is convex at the front and concave at the rear. It has a constriction for the pin, reinforced on the underside of the frame, with a soldered strip of silver that bridges the constriction. This arrangement does not appear to be a repair. The pin, D-shaped in cross-section, is flat on the underside except at the tip where it is slightly undercut due to wea…

Post medieval brooch; cast gold brooch of possible 16th century date. The brooch is a miniature ring of twisted gold wire sandwiched between two further rings of plain gold wire. There is further twisted wire forming a cross through the centre of the brooch, adorned with a gold pellet at the end of each arm and with a tiny ring of twisted wire in the centre. The back of the brooch has a fitting formed of a flat strip of gold which extends across the centre of the ring and is then curled up on itself at both ends to form loops. The finder confirms that there was originally a gold pin at…

Lead alloy Post Medieval brooch. It is oval in plan and appears plain on the front. It is possible it would have had a design on the front which is now gone. On the reverse is the remains of a rectangular loop which would have been used as an attachment method. It has broken so that only the two uprights remain. In the Post Medieval period, these loops were used instead of pins on some forms of brooch.

Silver circular shoe buckle with separate spindle set into the shank within the ring. Worn. The reverse stamped with maker's mark RG, possibly as recorded in Jackson' Silver and Gold Marks, ed. Pickford, 1989, p. 146 with recorded use for 1691-2. This would fit the dating of the buckle type but this does not mean the buckle is of this date, just roughly, and it is not possible to securely date it to pre 1707 and as such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. It is flat on the reverse with the detail on the front in relief. The reverse has the hook and remains of the hinge mechanism, at each end. The pin is missing. Other than that it appears complete. Sir Walter Raleigh is on the left, Queen Elizabeth on the right. Raleigh is wearing a hat with a feather in, a short cape, a sword at his left hip, hose and the shoes are unclear. Another length of beading to either side divides the centre from the ends, both of which have three rounded pellets. A post medieval annular brooch. An oval ring of thin 6.5mm wide stamped silver with flat pin and no pin-hook; the pin fastens by pulling the fabric through the ring. The pin stamped on the front with a maker's mark in a rectangle: JH/IH or TH, in cursive script. The mark is not recorded in Grimwade or Jackson and may perhaps be non-London maker, but the lettering is most characteristic of the early to mid 18th century. This does not qualify as Treasure.
