A complete Post Medieval silver annular brooch. The brooch is made up of a slightly convex silver sheet with striated decoration only around the base of the pin. On the back, maker's mark MC. The diameter is 22.5mm, the thickness is 3.1mm and the weight is 2.91g. Without the mark one might be tempted to think this artefact late medieval, but the form of the mark suggests a 16th Century date or later, though the mark is not recorded in Pickford (ed) of Jackson for this century. A complete Post-Medieval silver annular brooch from the sixteenth century onwards. Maker's mark on underside of frame. Length: 28.8mm; width: 23.3; thickness: 4.9mm; weight: 2.74g. Treasure case no. 2009 T48. The frame, now misshapen, is convex at the front and concave at the rear. It has a constriction for the pin, reinforced on the underside of the frame, with a soldered strip of silver that bridges the constriction. This arrangement does not appear to be a repair. Post medieval brooch; cast gold brooch of possible 16th century date. The brooch is a miniature ring of twisted gold wire sandwiched between two further rings of plain gold wire. There is further twisted wire forming a cross through the centre of the brooch, adorned with a gold pellet at the end of each arm and with a tiny ring of twisted wire in the centre. The back of the brooch has a fitting formed of a flat strip of gold which extends across the centre of the ring and is then curled up on itself at both ends to form loops. The finder confirms that there was originally a gold pin at…

Lead alloy Post Medieval brooch. It is oval in plan and appears plain on the front. It is possible it would have had a design on the front which is now gone. On the reverse is the remains of a rectangular loop which would have been used as an attachment method. It has broken so that only the two uprights remain. In the Post Medieval period, these loops were used instead of pins on some forms of brooch.

Silver circular shoe buckle with separate spindle set into the shank within the ring. Worn. The reverse stamped with maker's mark RG, possibly as recorded in Jackson' Silver and Gold Marks, ed. Pickford, 1989, p. 146 with recorded use for 1691-2. This would fit the dating of the buckle type but this does not mean the buckle is of this date, just roughly, and it is not possible to securely date it to pre 1707 and as such it falls outside the provisions of the Treasure Act 1996. Silver annular brooch. The frame is oval, 20 x 16.5mm (perhaps distorted), and angled; it is thickened on the underside, either side of the pin constriction, with slight transverse ridges flanking the pin constriction on the front. Flattened D-sectioned pin. Published in TAR 2000, no. 122, without illustration, and with a 13th-century date. The description, with its transverse ridges flanking a pin construction, sounds however more like a post-medieval annular brooch of the kind which often have makers' marks; compare GLO-E7A921, KENT-589DC5 etc. The date-range has accordingly be…

The item is leaf shaped with scalloped edges. The upper surface has a series of punched dots within each scallop. As an inner border there is an incised line forming a leaf shape. Silver sixpence of William III (1696) made into a pendant and later a brooch. The original silver sixpence is in slightly worn condition. At the crown there is a small deposit of solder visible on both the obverse and reverse of the coin. This suggests that the solder fills a small hole that had previously served to suspend the coin around the owners neck as a pendant. At the same time that the suspension hole was filled, a hinged pin and loop were soldered to the reverse of the coin to convert it into a brooch. The pin is now missing. The style of hinge suggests that the conversion to…

Three fragments of a lead alloy circular openwork frame, possibly part of a brooch. The design consists of a repeating pattern of circular settings (possibly originally intended for an inlay) open on each side, with an ornate openwork arch between. An incomplete cast copper alloy plate brooch. The brooch is heavily corroded and damaged. It is therefore difficult to say for certain how old this brooch is. It is possibly post-medieval in date but a Roman plate (2nd century) can not be ruled out. The brooch is roughly circular in shape, though heavily corroded and damaged. No decoration can be seen on the front surface. The reverse still houses the double lug and a small square catchplate. It is the widely spaced double lug which puts a question mark over the Roman date, as they were normally closer together in the Roman period…

A Post Medieval copper alloy wound wire ornament, probably a pin or a brooch (16th – 17th century). The object is constructed from a length of copper alloy wire that is sharpened at one end with a straight shaft and then the wire curves round on itself to form a loop and the free, blunt end is wrapped around the straight shaft ten times. The loop is slightly distorted and the coiled section is pulled down the straight shaft. The loop is decorated with a finer gauge wire. This finer wire is coiled and then coiled again around the loop. It is broken in places along its length. …
