A demi-gros struck at Valenciennes for Margaret of Constantinople, countess of Hainaut between 1275 and 1280. The reverse has been fitted with a silver attachment; this is most likely to be a catchplate for a brooch but the angle at which it is affixed to the coin make it possible it represents one of a pair of grips by which the coin was fastened to a leather strap as a mount. This work would have been carried out soon after striking, at a period when, owing to the lack of large English silver coins, Continental coins of suitable size were being adapted into coin brooches.

The object is a silver penny of the Short Cross coinage which has been converted into a brooch. The coin was originally a silver penny of Short Cross class 5bi, issued in 1205 under King John. The moneyer was Pieres operating at Durham: the reverse inscription +PIERES.ON.DVR is virtually complete. The coin would have been produced to the established standard of the English medieval coinage, over 90% fine silver. The penny has been substantially altered and it could no longer be a functioning coin. The central section with the main design (king's head on the front, short double cross…

Silver annular brooch. Two ends of the loop, one of which is in the form of a very simple snake head with two pellets for eyes, are joined by being twisted around each other so that the snakes own tail is wrapped around it's neck. A separate piece of silver wrapped around the frame forms a second smaller snake twisted around the first on one half of the frame only. The outside edge is decorated with very worn stamped dots. Traces of gilding. Pin with transverse ridge. External diameter 17 - 19mm, weight 2.14g. Late 13th century.

Treasure report from Dr Dora Thornton: Silver pin from a medieval annular brooch, shaft with tapered end and thistle-head like element at the other end where the loop would have encircled the brooch frame. Compare TAR 2005-6, no. 333 for a complete brooch in which both frame and pin are of this decoration, there dated 13th -14th Century, which seems right for this fragment.

Cast cu-alloy pin, probably from an annular brooch (or buckle) dating from the medieval period, i.e. 13th-15th century. The pin is very worn and the surface extremely corroded. However, the loop which would have curved around the brooch/buckle frame is still intact at one end. The other end terminates in a curved point which would have rested on the opposite site of the circular frame.

An incomplete cast copper alloy annular brooch, dating to the 13th - 15th Century. The brooch frame survives intact but the pin is missing. The brooch has been pressed from a sheet of copper alloy, so the raised design on the front in embossed on the reverse. The design alternates between parallel lines which have a central hole and four small raised pyramids. The holes are used to house iron rivets, which have a decorative function - as they have domed heads. Two are missing - making the holes visible. The reverse has two loops of folded over copper alloy sheet soldered to it. These…

A Medieval lead alloy (pewter) annular brooch with copper alloy pin dating AD1200-1400. The brooch has a flat frame with moulded inscription "IAVAIVAVIAVIAV" within a linear border. This is probably a much blundered version of AVE MARIA GRACIA PLENIA. The frame has a constriction to accommodate the pin. The pin is still present and is made from a piece of copper alloy wire wrapped around the frame and the other end sharpened to form a point. A similar brooch is illustrated in Egan & Pritchard (1991:254 no.1336) that one is from a context dated AD1230-1260. On that example the legend i…

A copper alloy buckle frame of Medieval date. The frame is D-shaped in plan with a flattened back and narrowed, offset bar, with small grooves and projecting knops at the point where the frame and bar meet.
