The remains of a copper-alloy medieval annular brooch, with just under half of the original artefact surviving. One of the broken ends features a constriction presumably for the pin. The brooch would have been circular, with six projecting circular collets; three are present on this fragment, evenly spaced. One collet still contains a green gemstone (or glass), with another gem removed recently; there is a lack of corrosion product over the white fixative. Any decorative detail has been lost due to corrosion.

An annular dress accessory cast in copper alloy: probably a brooch of medieval date. The central perforation is not quite circular. It has two slight protrusions which face each other internally. These, together with some staining on the lower surface suggest at a central pin bar which would be more consistent with a buckle. Its absence might suggest that the object was converted in its use. The annular frame features six equally spaced circular perforations. One of these retains a large dome-headed rivet (L.: 6.65mm), with part of a rivet surviving in another; the other four are…

A complete cast copper-alloy medieval annular brooch. The brooch is seemingly bevelled externally and internally on both faces and as such would have a lozengiform cross section (int. dia.: 22.6mm). In the raised central circle there is punched decoration. Both surfaces feature incisions which hint at lettering: 'O's and retrograde 'N's. In this sense the brooch is similar to one illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 249; ref. 1308). The frame is recessed for a solid pin. The pin's loop in not quite complete. The pin has a solid circular boss at the collar. It has corroded to th…

A diminutive medieval annular brooch frame cast in copper alloy. The frame has a flat, plain lower surface. The upper surface is bevelled internally and externally. Around one half features punched decoration made with a rectangular tool. The frame has a notched recess for a pin; the punched removal opposite could have acted as a pin rest; the pin is now missing. The brooch now has an even grey patina with some patches of lighter corrosion product.

A complete silver-gilt annular brooch of medieval date. There is a constriction for the tapering pin which is triangular in cross-section and has a transverse ridged collar below its loop. The frame is heavily moulded with a zigzag pattern with a groove within and deep triangular removals either side. The lower surface is flat, ungilded, and decorated with interlocking elongated S-shaped motifs featuring small linear incisions at their terminals.

The broken and damaged cast silver-gilt pin from a medieval annular brooch. The upper surface has a flat median strip with bevelling to each side; the lower surface is flat. The loop is recessed, now broken, and decorated with punched annulets. The pointed tip has been bent round beyond the loop as a result of old damage.

A complete medieval cast copper-alloy probable annular brooch (possibly a buckle). The frame is circular, with the internal edge bevelled, and the outer edge rounded. There is a pin constriction where the pin remains in situ. The pin has been split at the attachment end, and the ends bent together around the pin constriction. The pin itself has a thick collar just beyond the constriction. The pin gradually narrows to a blunt point and is slightly bent. This artefact now has a dull grey-green patina.

An incomplete and damaged medieval cast copper-alloy annular brooch of c. 14th-century date. The artefact has two parallel lines running along the edges of the upper surface acting as a border, possibly formed by a roulette wheel. Within this border is an inscription which has been slightly blundered: '+ (Cross crosslet) IhC [N]AXARE'. This legend refers to Jesus of Nazareth. The lower surface is plain and undecorated. The artefact is bent upwards at a ninety degree angle and has a mid-green patina with areas of off-white corrosion product. One of the breaks has occurred at a natural …

A medieval annular brooch frame cast in copper alloy. The frame has flat, plain lower and internal surfaces. The upper surface is formed of beaded segments divided by transverse grooves. The frame has a notched recess for a pin; the pin is now missing. The brooch now has a dark red/brown patina consistent with gilding; there are possible traces of gilt. A similar decorative treatment can be seen on a brooch illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 249; ref. 1311).

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date, incomplete in as much as it is missing the tip of its pin. The frame is sub-circular, with protrusions at the cardinal points. Because all of the protrusions extend inwards (as well as outwards) the recess at the centre of the brooch is quadrilobate. At the sides are platforms that extend outwards from the frame, and to a lesser extent inwards. From these platforms tapering collets emerge. There is no longer anything in the concavities at the summits of collets but it assumed that they would have held precious stones or imitations o…

A small, cast copper-alloy annular brooch with zoomorphic decoration of medieval date (c. 12th century AD). It shows two creatures of equal length biting each others' tails in moulded heads. The frame has a broadly circular cross section: the circumference is rounded, while the internal side is bevelled above and below; both outer surfaces are flat. Located centrally between the moulded heads is a pin constriction. A basic flat, wire pin survives in situ with an abraded tip. The two animal heads are identical and prominently moulded in high relief. The emerge from the frame with mould…

A small, cast copper-alloy annular brooch with zoomorphic decoration of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It is broadly symmetrical, formed of two facing creatures of equal length, probably wyverns, whose tails overlap. Their bodies are elongated comma shapes, at the flat upper end of which is a constriction representing the neck (W.: c. 2.3mm). This latter is faceted, as are the heads beyond who have angular punches on each side to represent eyes. Between the heads is a further constriction for the pin. A basic flat, wire pin survives in situ bent slightly to one side as a result o…

A small, cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It has bevelled sides on its upper surface which, given a broadly flat lower surface gives it a triangular cross-section. The lower surface is slightly bevelled internally (miscast?) with diagonal file marks covering the main surface. As with a brooch illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 251; ref. 1317) with a triangular cross-section the pin constriction is formed through a circumferential notch. A basic thin, drawn wire pin survives in situ, very slightly bent. The upper surface is decorated with th…

A small, cast copper-alloy annular brooch probably with degenerated zoomorphic decoration of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It is broadly hexagonal (with rounded corners) in form. A small, gilded cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It has a circular, cable decorated (twisted) frame formed of many, tight rotations. It has a broadly circular cross-section. Around a pin constriction a basic flat sheet pin survives in situ. It has a bevelled upper surface and tapers to a point. Small traces of gilt survive over dark-brown patina. Both brooch and pin have corroded in places and green and brown corrosion product occasionally shows through. A similar brooch can be found illustrated in Biddle (1990, 643; ref. 2037).

A small, tinned copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th century AD). It was formed of a low convex sheet with a central circular cut out (Dia.: c. 9.2mm); the frame is therefore angled in profile. A basic, pointed sheet pin survives within a perforation (rather than a constriction, and probably earlier as a result); there is no pin rest. A small, corroded cast copper-alloy annular brooch of medieval date (c. 13th century AD), incomplete in so far as it is missing its pin. It is formed of a flat ring so has a rectangular (with rounded corners) cross-section. There is a pin constriction, but no obvious pin rest (groove) opposite. On its upper surface the brooch bears an inscription, albeit one largely obscured through corrosion. Letters have been picked out in rows of finely punched dots.
