A miniature medieval brooch, roughly oval in shape, and terminating in two joined hands. The brooch has two facets which carry an enigmatic inscription, punctuated by flowers and colons. Reading clockwise from the pin, the letters are On the inner band N V I V N: I I M I N I On the outer band: V I I I T I: I: I - I I V L V I (?)I The meaning of this is unclear, but may have magical or amuletic significance. The two hands may once have held a pearl, which is customary for brooches of this type. The brooch is gold, and dates from the thirteenth century.

A Medieval copper alloy annular brooch dating from the 12th century AD. The annular section of the brooch is 'd' shaped in section and is 17.5mm in diameter. the separate pin is still in position and is 16.6mm long. On either side of the brooch there two projections, opposite each other. One of these is damaged by an old break but the other is in the shape of a turned over animal head. The heads would have faced each other and would have acted as a hock mechanism together with the pin. A very similar example can be seen in Mills 1999 page 56. The brooch is 36.6mm long, 21.7mm wide, 2.8…

A Medieval copper alloy cast brooch, probably dating from the 12th century AD. The brooch is formed of a continuous circle of twisted copper alloy, the twists of which are decorated with alternate sections of larger and smaller circular pellets. There is a plain raised section in between each of the decorated sections. There is no pin constriction on the brooch, although there are two worn sections on either side of the brooch, possibly where a pin had been placed. Geoff Egan suggests that there are annular brooches without pin constrictions particularly from the 12th century. The bro…

The find is a fragment of a silver coin that has been converted into a brooch by the addition of an attachment to one side. The coin is a silver gros tournois of Philip IV, King of France (1285-1307), a relatively large silver coin for the period. The utilisation of French gros tournois in this manner is familiar in England at this time, and there have been several finds of similar items. It is definitely an English phenomenon, as such converted coins are not found in France. The coins used are mostly datable to the period c. 1280-c. 1310, i.e. the decades either side of 1300 and on a…

Treasure report from J P Robinson: A Medieval brooch, slightly distorted, with a domed profile of thin sheet metal forming a wide circular frame. The pin is still attached through an aperture cut into the frame. An inscription covers the front of the brooch between two beaded borders. Damage to the brooch renders part of the inscription partly illegible. It reads P(?) E H ? ? M E I D E(?) M A N D The meaning is unclear. The letters seem to have been picked out in niello. The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the thirteenth century.

13th-15th Century. Copper alloy, cast, large ring/annular brooch pin. Length 50.2mm, Width 14.2mm, Thickness 4.3mm, Weight 6.6g. Plain type, except for a rectangular panel of transverse grooves just in front of the incomplete circular attachment end. The shaft which is roughly square in section, swells out before narrowing towards a blunted 'pointed' terminal. Fastened by pulling a tuck of material through the ring and then pushing the pin through; any excess material was then pulled back and the brooch thus tensioned and secured. In this case the garment had an open weave or woolen c…

A Medieval brooch frame, missing its pin. It consists of a simple wire hoop and four spherical bosses placed at equidistant intervals around it. Each of the bosses has been decorated with circular punches, though much of the definition has now been lost. The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the late thirteenth or early fourteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
