An incomplete copper alloy La Téne I type brooch, dating from circa 4th – 3rd century BC. The spring and head of the brooch are missing and the break is very worn. The bow is arched and tapers outwards from the head and then inwards from the swollen centre. The bow has a circular cross-section. The bow then continued into the foot. The foot is bent around on itself and has been looped up under the main bow, forming the catchplate. The front of the catchplate has been decorated with two incised lines at the top, then there is a circular disc and then below the disc four incised lin…

A copper alloy bow brooch which is probably a Simple Gaulish variant of the Colchester type. It probably dates from the Late Iron Age or Early Roman period. The brooch has a simple narrow bow which is a pointed oval shape in section. It is 72.4mm long, 13.3mm wide and 3.4mm thick. At the foot end the bow tapers to a point and forms a spiral loop. There is a slight flange on the reverse of the foot end of the bow which probably indicates where the catchplate would have been, but none of it survives. The head of the brooch flares into very small and narrow wings which are little more tha…

A corroded and incomplete copper-alloy La Tène I Iron Age brooch (3rd-4th century BC). The brooch is sub-oval in plan and semicircular in cross-section, with a flat reverse surface. At the head one spring coil remains, to the left when viewing the brooch with head uppermost. The bow arcs round to a leg in the same plane as the head; the foot and catchplate have been lost along with the rest of the pin mechanism. The brooch is a mid-green colour with variable survival of surface patina. A comparable example can be found illustrated in Hattatt (2001, 288; ref. 725).

A corroded and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. A one-piece example with a broken and now vestigial rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 2.9mm). This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings which survive bent and abraded (W. across wings: 17.2mm). The bow is sub-oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum width of c. 6.5mm to less than 1.4mm at the catchplate end,…

An incomplete cast copper alloy Roman Birdlip type brooch. The brooch head, in plan is semi-circular and in profile is domed. The reverse of the head has a narrowed integral sub-circular projection which is waisted and expands. The terminal is broken but may have originally formed a concave void within which the spring mechanism was attached. This is probably a recent break. Copper alloy penannular brooch of Fowler type C and dated to the 1st century BC – 1st century AD. The brooch is formed of a band of copper-alloy, of oval cross section, which has been bent round into a broad, open oval shape. The band does not meet and the terminals at either end of the band are formed by flattening the metal and rolling it up on itself. The pin is still present and is formed of a single flat piece of copper alloy, curled around the band of the brooch at one end and shaped to a rough point at the other end, where it rests on the opposite side of the brooch.
