Incomplete wire copper alloy bow brooch with short bilateral spring, coiled into 5 loops on a central, solid copper alloy axial rod, which holds the spring together. The chord seems to be missing but it could only have been attached to one end of the spring as the other end is in the centre, next to the central coil which extends to form part of the bow. The bow is broken and bent at an angle from subsequent damage, so the original curvature cannot be made out. The foot, pin and catchplate are missing. The surface of the brooch is corroded and pitted so that the recorder cannot determi…

A very worn and incomplete cast copper-alloy Colchester brooch dating to the late Iron Age to early Roman period, c. 25-65 AD. A one-piece example with an intact rearward facing hook at the top of the head (L.: 13.1mm). This hook would have held the external chord of the spring; this latter, along with the pin, broken just below the head such that a curved vestige remains, is now missing. Below the hook there are two flat wings of which only vestiges now remain. The bow is oval in cross-section. It tapers from a maximum diameter of c. 5.4mm to less than 1.5mm at the catchplate end. The…

An incomplete damaged and misshapen copper alloy La Tene III ‘Nauheim’ derivative brooch of 'Winchester' style (Hattatt 1987, 21). Overall length 60.6mm, maximum width of bow 7.2mm and thickness of bow 0.9mm. Weight 2.69g.
The brooch was cast in one piece and then wrought. The pin and most of the spring are missing due to an old break. The spring, when complete, would probably have had four coils and an internal chord. The surviving part of the spring is circular in cross-section and has a diameter of 0.9mm. Due to agricultural activity the brooch has become almost straightened …

The brooch is near-complete, missing only the pin and is comparatively small with a length of 36.88mm and has a weight of 3.2g. The spring mechanism (1.5mm diameter) coiled for three turns either side of the centre with a width of 14.60mm and the chord was anchored by the forward facing and tapering hook at the head. The spring has broken after the first coil on the return. The wings have a width of 13.17mm and are decorated on the fronts with vertical incised line…

A copper-alloy La Tène III type brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date (see R. Hattatt; 1987; pp. 21).
The brooch has been made in one piece. The head consists of four coils of spring and an internal chord. One of these coils would have extended into the now-missing pin. The central spring coil extends downwards into the bow, which has flat surfaces, increases to a maximum width of 8.2mm, before tapering towards the foot. The upper surface is decorated with two incised vertical lines, which divide the surface of the bow into three roughly equal strips. The brooch appears to be…

Late Iron Age to Roman (AD 25-100) copper-alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch. The brooch is incomplete, missing the spring and has a surviving length of 51.52mm and a weight of 4.7g. The spring has broken before the first coil, but it is likely that the spring would have coiled twice either side of the head and would have had an internal chord. The bow has a maximum width at the head of 4.40mm with straight sides, which converge towards the pointed foot. The bow is of D-shaped section with a maximum thickness of 3.46 near the head. The upper bow is decorated with a series of oblique incis…

Copper alloy penannular brooch length 48mm, width 53mm, thickness 5mm, weight 8.05g. Round section frame, the ends have been flattened and turn back on them selves twice to give a scroll effect terminal. The pin is made from copper alloy with the terminal bent round into a loop. The overall condition is poor, because corrosion has affected much of the artefact leaving a heavily pitted surface with bright green powdery patches.
This type of brooch corresponds with Fowler type C and dates to the 1st century BC to 1st century AD

The brooch is long and slender but severely corroded. It would have had small diminutive wings. However, one side of the wings is missing and the other side is incomplete due to old breaks. A copper alloy La Tene type Iron Age brooch. Only one loop of the bilaterial spring remains from which the brooch rises abruptly to form the bow. This then turns in a curve at 90 degrees along the line of the brooch to form the upper bow which then turns down again before curving at 90 degrees to form a tapering foot from which the wedge-shaped catchplate rises with a turned over lip at its upper extremity to retain the pin. Viewed side-on, the bow of the brooch therefore forms a wide inverted 'U' shape. In the centre of the upper bow the brooch is formed into a 3mm thick flat circul…
