Incomplete Roman Langton Down type copper alloy brooch, 1st century AD. The brooch has an old break just below the wings therefore only showing 11mm of the bow. At the point where the wings and the bow meet there are some vertically incised short lines running above and on the semi circular ridge. The bow itself shows the very worn standard reeded decoration which would run vertically down the bow. The bow comes down at virtually a right angle from the wings. The tubular wingspan is broken which also appears to be from an old break. The pin and spring mechanism is missing. With the ba…

A fragment of Late Iron Age/ Roman (AD 25-70) copper alloy Strip-Bow brooch, consisting of the head and upper bow only. It measures 15.7x11.2x5mm and weighs 1.6g. The wings curl backwards around the corroded iron axis bar. The head (max.width) narrows to 9.8mm at the worn break. Bayley and Butcher (2004, p.154) think that this type of Strip-Bow brooch - with the wings curled away from the bow - may be pre-Conquest in date, although examples from Maiden Castle in Dorset have been found in contexts AD 25-70 (Wheeler 1943 fig.84 nos.17-27).
