Copper alloy penannular brooch of Fowler type C and dated to the 1st century BC – 1st century AD. The brooch is formed of a band of copper-alloy, of oval cross section, which has been bent round into a broad, open oval shape. The band does not meet and the terminals at either end of the band are formed by flattening the metal and rolling it up on itself. The pin is still present and is formed of a single flat piece of copper alloy, curled around the band of the brooch at one end and shaped to a rough point at the other end, where it rests on the opposite side of the brooch. A copper alloy Iron Age penannular brooch. The brooch is 27.7mm long, 25mm wide and 5.6mm thick. It is sub-circular and has rounded terminals putting the brooch into Fowler’s type A which was in use during the Iron Age period (‘The Origins and Development of the Penannular Brooch in Europe’ by Elizabeth Fowler in The Proceedings of the Prehistoric Society, 1960). The terminal knops are in fact faceted, which is more like Fowler’s type D, but the terminals do not appear to be folded back as in a true type D brooch. Type D was used in the Roman period, so a Roman date is possible…

Copper alloy brooch, an unusual type of plate brooch, probably dating from the Late Iron Age through to the Roman period. It consists of three circular domes connected together in a triangular shape. Each dome hasa grooved line around its base. There are remains of gilding on the front surface. On the reverse are the remains of a catchplate and a pin mechanism, it appears to have been hinged. It is similar in form to the button and loop fasteners and other domed objcts such as mounts which span the Iron Age/Roman period.
