A copper-alloy La Tène III type brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date (see R. Hattatt; 1987; pp. 21). The brooch has been made in one piece. The head consists of four coils of spring and an internal chord. One of these coils would have extended into the now-missing pin. The central spring coil extends downwards into the bow, which has flat surfaces, increases to a maximum width of 8.2mm, before tapering towards the foot. The upper surface is decorated with two incised vertical lines, which divide the surface of the bow into three roughly equal strips. The brooch appears to be…

An incomplete copper-alloy brooch of late Iron Age date. This brooch type is classified by Hattatt as a ‘Glastonbury’ type (1987, p. 18-19). The spring and pin are entirely missing. The head comprises a vertically aligned ring through which the axis bar would have passed. This ring extends into the bow, which is of roughly circular section and tapers towards the foot, where it loops upwards into the openwork catchplate. The bow is separated from the foot by a moulded ring comprising a central band flanked above and below by a lower band. The catchplate has an angled upper side,…

An incomplete copper-alloy La Tene I brooch of Iron Age date (cf Hattatt 2000: fig. 147). The brooch has been cast in one-piece. The widest part of the arched bow is at the centre, from where it gradually tapers in both directions. At the centre of the convex upper surface is a vertical ridge. The spring and pin are missing, the patination of the break suggesting that this damage occurred in antiquity. The foot extends vertically downwards from the base of the bow. It has a rolled outer edge and is also missing its lower portion, which would probably have curved back towards th…

A cast copper-alloy brooch of late Iron Age date. This brooch type is classified by Hattatt as a 'Glastonbury' type (Brooches of Antiquity, p. 18-19, number 733). The head comprises a vertically aligned ring which extends to the bow. Through this ring is a seperate axis bar, 19mm long and 2mm in diameter. The axis bar is held in place by the spring, one side (the left side) of which is integral to the head of the bow, with the ring bifurcating and coiling around the axis bar. The spring on the right side of the axis bar is loose and held in place by the axis bar widening slightly. The…

A copper-alloy brooch of Iron Age date. The head is incomplete, the one remaining spring coil on top of the head containing iron corrosion from the otherwise missing axis bar. The base of the spring coil extends into the humped bow, which is of flattened-oval section, has a longitudinal central groove on its outer surface and tapers towards the foot. This foot takes the form of an upward-curving loop, its top edge resting against the bow's outer surface. At the foot's inside edge the side curves around a vertical groove, forming a secure pin slot. The terminal is zoomorphic…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy Iron Age brooch. The bow and spring have been cast in a single piece. Only a small part of the bow survives and it is sub oval in section and undecorated. At the surviving end the bow expands very slightly before contracting in width to form the flattened sub circular sectioned wire of the spring which is of the four coil type. It has been bent out of shape and the pin is missing. Most of the brooches surface is covered in patches of green and pale green-grey corrosion but in some places traces of an even dark green-brown patina is visible It is d…

An incomplete copper-alloy Nauheim-derivative brooch, probably dating from the 1st century AD. The widest point of the bow is approximately one third of the way down; from here it tapers in both directions. At the top it extends into an upward curve, representing part of the spring mechanism. The upper surface bears three cast ridges, one being at the centre, the other two at the edges. These ridges are interspersed with lightly incised vertical ropework incisions. At the base the pattern changes to an an area of cross-hatched grooves, with a transverse groove at the top. The remain…

An incomplete copper-alloy bow brooch of late Iron Age to early Roman date. The original form of this piece is uncertain and although it bears some similarities to the La Tène III type brooches of the 1st century BC, a later, Roman date cannot be ruled out. The head and upper part of the bow are missing. The bow is thin in section and tapers to a point at the foot. At the centre of the bow's upper surface is a vertical ridge with a central groove. The foot is damaged and incomplete. The brooch measures 33.71mm long, 6.98mm wide and 1.41mm thick. The weight is 1.56g.

An incomplete copper-alloy brooch of late Iron Age date. This would appear to be an example of a La Tène II or III type brooch, dating from the 2nd century BC to early 1st century AD. The brooch has been made from a strip of copper-alloy which has been bent into an elongated bow. The widest point is at the top of the bow. From here, it tapers upwards into the remaining portion of the spring, and downwards into the (albeit thicker) bow. There is no trace of a catchplate. The artefact measures 57.8mm long, 5.9mm wide and weighs 3.2g.

A copper alloy Hod Hill variant type brooch dating to the first century AD. The brooch possesses a flat triangular head. The hinge type head is damaged in the area where it is rolled over to secure the axis bar and pin. There is triangular cut out at the head to accommodate the pin and iron corrosion on the reverse. The head tapers to the bow which is decorated with marginal grooves and two diagonal and one horizontal row of notches. The bow is separated from the leg by four ribbed mouldings.
