A fragment of a cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon (or Anglian) cruciform brooch. The fragment comprises part of the head plate and one knob, probably the top knob. The head plate has been badly damaged but retains its broadly rectangular shape. There is a raised central panel which is edged on either side with punchmarks, probably annulets. The surviving knob is half-round with a flat-topped basal moulding decorated with two fine grooves, and a further fine groove at the base of the rounded terminal. The moulding and terminal are divided by a broad groove. The metal has a mid reddis…

An incomplete Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) gilded silver keystone disc brooch of Avent's Class 3, set with garnets.
This brooch is decorated with three evenly spaced keystone garnets surrounding a central roundel. The keystone garnets have hatched gold foil backing, all apparently of the same design of squares divided into nine; one garnet has a linear fracture. The fields between the garnets abutting the roundel are very dirty, but appear to be decorated with three identical Style I animals, each with a C-shaped double-strand head frame angled towards the garnet, then a body of pe…

A cast copper-alloy and gilded headplate and upper bow of a great square-headed brooch of the early Anglo-Saxon period, 6th century, containing a blue glass setting.
The headplate is largely complete, with a small inner panel, a second panel, and an outer frame. The base of the upper bow connects to the lower edge of the inner panel. The bow has a broad, undecorated central ridge and undecorated side ridges. The central ridge is flanked on either side by three narrow ridges running vertically. Corrosion obscures detail of these narrow ridges, but the central ridge may be composed of…

A cast, copper-alloy and gilded square-headed brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period.
The headplate consists of an inner panel made with a central quatrefoil set within five circumscribed squares (each missing the bottom fourth side between the quatrefoil and the bow). The second panel is C-shaped, again not enclosing the inner panel, and has scrolled T-shapes. There is no broad outer frame, though there is a double-line separating the second panel from the outside edges of the head. Gilding remains preserved in excellent condition in the incised decoration of the head.

An incomplete copper-alloy Early Anglo-Saxon supporting-arm brooch. It is missing the axis bar, spring, pin and outer edge of the catchplate due to old breaks. The wings are D-shaped in section with perforated lugs at their ends and a rear face that contains extensive iron corrosion resulting from the now-missing spring, axis bar and pin. The front of the wings (or the head of the brooch) is decorated with two pairs of transverse double grooves. Beneath the head the bow is steeply curved, sub-circular in cross-section with a rounded reverse and slightly faceted front with a central ve…

Terminal from a copper-alloy penannular brooch of early-medieval date and Irish origin. A short length of the curved frame survives, with a D-shaped cross-section, and there is a thickening where this joins the terminal.
The terminal is sub-triangular and decorated with a shallow cast relief design. The fragment is corroded so that it is hard to see the details of the design, but it appears to be formed around a sunken lozenge shape within an oval frame with D-shaped cells around the edge of this frame, two above and one below. The edges appear either wavy or incomplete; all edges …

Fragment of a cast lead disc brooch decorated with two circumferential raised rings around its outer edge. The inner ring is linked to the centre by two surviving spoke-like ribs, the intersections being marked by pellets. There may have been another element in the design which reached the outer ring but this is damaged and incomplete. On the back of the brooch are the flattened remains of the spring fitting consisting of two rounded lugs through which are holes for the spring chord.

Brooch fragment made from copper alloy, possibly a fragment of a small ansate brooch. A thin straight bow bends towards the putative centre, with a hinge or catch plate stub on the reverse. Decoration appears to be crudely chip carved, though this impression may result from corrosion. There are also horizontal bands and one vertical strip of an off- white material which may be degraded enamel. If the identification of the object as from an ansate brooch is not sustained, an alternative Roman date may be considered. Ansate brooches are Frankish in origin and used on the Continent from …

An incomplete copper alloy brooch in the form of a cross with a hinge mechanism, possibly of Early-Medieval rather than Roman date. The pin is incomplete with three damaged arms. The arms of the brooch are flat and 1.50mm thick. They are c.6mm wide. At the centre of the brooch is a central boss, flat on top and narrowing from its base (5.57mm diameter to 3.49mm over 3.5mm). The top is decorated with a groove, slightly on th…

Early-Medieval copper-alloy strip brooch, length 40mm, width 23mm, thickness 1mm, weight 4.28g. The brooch consists of an undecorated flat lozenge-shaped plate. The integral spring emerges from the top corner of the brooch and coils once before straightening to form the pin; the rest of the pin is now missing. At the opposite corner is a small protruding rod that is bent back on itself and would have acted as a catchplate.

A complete cast copper-alloy brooch of cross-on-bird form dating to the middle early-medieval period. The bird has a rounded head with slightly downward-pointing beak, and crude but discernable representations of a folded wing (in slightly higher relief), tail and two feet. An Early Medieval cast copper-alloy late early-medieval cloisonné brooch of the late 10th/11th century AD. The brooch consists of a raised trefoil shaped, convex centre plate from which nine equally spaced integral lobes would emerge; a tenth lobe appears to have been broken away. Three of the lobes, at 2. 6 and 10 O'clock are significantly larger than the other (5.5mm in diameter).
