Scandinavian copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is decorated with an openwork Jellinge-style design of an interlacing animal (see NMS-7446E3 and ESS-4D7A85 for other examples of this style). On the reverse there are the remains of the pin lug and catchplate. The pin is missing. There is also part of the suspension loop which the wearer could have passed a chain through to wear the brooch as a pendant. Jane Kershaw has identified this as Scandinavian - a Jellinge-style disc brooch, Jansson Type I A1 (Jansson in Arwidsson1984; Kershaw 2009). There is a close parallel from Cambridge…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy applied saucer brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. Only the baseplase, central stud, and pin fittings remain. The baseplate is circular, but with minor chipping to the edges. The baseplate is very slightly concave. The stud is roughly hour-glass shaped, with a flat top and flat base. The top is 7.27mm in diameter and the stud 9mm in height from base to top. A small shank on the base of the stud fits through a perforation in the baseplate and has been possibly soldered to the base plate, though corrosion obscures this. Extending to either side of the stud …

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is flat and rectangular in section, with the width of the ring measuring 9.53mm. There is a rectangular perforation to take a pin, now lost. However, the perforation retains iron corrosion and measures 4.9mm x 2.3mm. The brooch is decorated on its display face. Every 90 degrees, a band runs transversely across the brooch, defined by two incised lines to either side, so that there is a broad central band and two narrower flanking bands. The pin hole is placed in the centre of one of these broad central ba…

A cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period, dating to the mid 6th century. The brooch is nearly complete, missing only the pin, though the top and base are corroed in situ in the pin fitting and catchplate, respectively. Some textile may also be preserved by the iron corrosion of the pin between the pin and the underside of the head plate. The brooch can be separated into three primary elements which will be described in turn: the headplate, the bow, and the foot. For purposes of description, the brooch is oriented with the headplate at the top. The headpla…

A fragment of cast copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon brooch, probably a cruciform brooch, dating to c. 450-550 AD The fragment consists of the headplate and part of the bow only. The headplate is rectangular, with a square central panel and slightly lower wings, only one of which survives in good condition. The top and one side knob survive, both much abraded. They are integrally cast with the headplate and are a low D shape in cross-section. The side knob is on the observer's right; it has a waist and a ridge below the waist. The top knob probably was originally similar. On the reverse …

A fragment of cast metalwork from the Early Medieval period, probably part of a brooch. The fragment is sub-rectangular and is 14.4mm long, 11.3mm wide and 3.3mm thick. All of the edges are broken. The centre of the front is decorated with triple strand interlace. To one side are radiating lines which are just visible before the break. Near complete cast copper alloy small-long brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, c.450-550AD. The brooch consists of a rectangular headplate with an arched bow which terminates in a slightly flared foot. The headplate is decorated along the side and top edges with at least 19 surviving double-annulet stamps. Most of the stamps are incomplete, so that the effect is of a double crescent. On the reverse of the headplate is a rounded pin bar lug with faint deposit of iron at the head, marking where the spring and pin were once attached. The bow is C-shaped in side view and has a rectangula…
