Early-medieval one-piece circular or cross-shaped brooch consisting of a circular plate with a rectangular projection at the top which curls backwards and under to form an integral wire spring. The plate has two angled, oval perforations in the upper part and two corresponding curved edges within the incomplete lower portion of the plate, giving a cross-shaped effect. The plate is slightly concave (probably bent), and broken at the bottom so that one arm of the cross is missing. The spring is broken at the end, which projects downwards below the wound loop; the rest of the pin is miss…

An early medieval disc or saucer brooch with a central circular hole. Around the hole, and within a double-line square frame, is a cast design composed of animals in Salin's Style I. On the back are the remains of an iron spring and pin and a scar of the missing catchplate. None of the edges of the brooch appears to be original. Helen Geake comments: This could have been a cast saucer brooch: the pin fittings are so close to the edge that there could easily be some of the base missing. Its rim has either sheared off completely in the plough soil (rims are often very thin at the bre…

A cast flat disc brooch. Around the circumference are eighteen projecting tooth-like lobes, giving the brooch a cogwheel-like appearance. In the centre is a low lozengiform boss with a concave underside. Four approximately D-shaped perforations make an openwork cross. A groove around the central boss extends at each corner to form a line down the centre of each arm. Around the cross is a circular band with a further groove forming a border. On the reverse is a pin-lug set parallel to the outer edge of the brooch and a catch-plate set perpendicular to it. Traces of iron corrosion aroun…

Fragment of a cast copper alloy saucer brooch. Central design consisted of six running spirals, the tendrils ending at the centre of each spiral in small rings with hollow centres. In the centre of the brooch is another similar ring, with a circular ridge around it. Around all of this is a plain raised ring. Only 2.5mm of the original edge survives but this is turned up, representing the angle of the brooch's angled rim. On the back of the brooch is a 7.0mm long x 2.0mm high rib which formed part of the catch plate.

The bow has longitudinal grooves above transverse grooves; the footplate has pairs of transverse grooves above and below side facets (one replaced by a casting flaw). The catchplate survives well on the reverse; it runs the full length of the foot. The material blocking the interior of the catchplate may represent the iron pin. Width at break 5.5mm. Width at base 9.5mm. Break not recent. First half 5th century.
