Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch fragment, lead, probably the foot terminal from a florid brooch. The object is in the form of a human face and is roughly D-shaped in cross-section. The upper surface is decorated in relief with a prominant forehead and deep set moulded eyes in the form of two large moulded pellets. The nose is large, triangular and flanked by two chubby-looking curved cheeks. There is a deeply incised elongated triangular channel at the bottom of either cheek, which emphasises them against the rest of the face. The mouth is relatively small and represented by two ver…

A fragment of a cast lead Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of part of the foot. Either side of which are lappets, originally in the form of eagle's heads. At the lower end of the fragment is a moulding representing the brow with ridges above the eyes on the foot. Behind the foot is the remains of the catchplate, which has been turned over, apparently for use. A feature of the brooch that cannot be understood is the material that fills the recessed lines on the face of this object. This is mid-green and purple in colour and seems soft. It has been su…

Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, lead. Incomplete lead object which may have formed part of lead cruciform brooch. The object is flat and in the form of a face with scroll-like hair or moustache, depending on which way round the face is viewed. The eyes are large pellets, beneath which is a triangular shaped snout or forehead. The edges of the object is very worn and so it is hard to determine where it is broken. Its back is plain and there are no obvious signs of attachment. The fragment looks similar to the animal-headed foots seen on Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooches.

This fragment has a surviving length of 29.8mm and a maximum width of 11.3mm. It bears all of the decorative elements seen on cruciform brooches; a groove down the back of the bow, faceting and incised lines, the latter cut with a sharp instrument. It is likely, but not certain, that the brooch was shaped by casting before the decoration was added. On the underside of the bow is a narrow groove and a projection which probably represents the catch-plate. As both the foot and the head of the brooch are missing it is impossible to assign it to any group.

Early Medieval lead disc brooch fragment. The decoration is concentric and consisted of a ring of pellets and two plain, raised rings. What is now the outer edge appears toothed and the central area was raised, as is seen on the lead brooch from Ketsby. (Leahy, 2007, Fig. 80, 6). A projection on the back may represent part of the pin mechanism. These brooches, when decorated, can be shown to be tenth-eleventh century.Length 17.0mm, Width 11.2mm, Thickness 3.5mm, Section 1.4mm, Mass 1.64g.

A late Anglo-Saxon lead disc brooch of Weetch type 4C, dating circa 950-1000. The disc brooch is of the 'Curved Arm' type (Weetch 2014, p.76, fig. 3.11). The brooch is circular, flat, and largely in good condition apart from damage to the perimeter. The brooch is decorated with a lozenge with a perimeter formed of a pair of beaded lines. This lozenge encloses five moulded pellets. Each of the arms of the lozenge terminate with a transverse collar formed of two beaded lines. Beyond each collar each arm appears to flow into an interlace design which spills into the voids in each angle. …
