An early medieval disc or saucer brooch with a central circular hole. Around the hole, and within a double-line square frame, is a cast design composed of animals in Salin's Style I. On the back are the remains of an iron spring and pin and a scar of the missing catchplate. None of the edges of the brooch appears to be original. Helen Geake comments: This could have been a cast saucer brooch: the pin fittings are so close to the edge that there could easily be some of the base missing. Its rim has either sheared off completely in the plough soil (rims are often very thin at the bre…

An incomplete early Saxon disc brooch. The brooch is divided into two concentric fields by a pair of inscribed concentric grooves. The outer field has two concentric circles of opposed double lunate punches with a single circle of annulet punches between, each of the latter inlaid with what appears to be niello. The internal field contains four small concentric grooves around a central pit with four double circles and pits, forming a square, all within a ring of punched circles. The brooch originally had an iron pin.

A diamond-shaped and slightly domed sheet metal strip brooch of Middle Saxon date (c.AD780-820). Traces of gilding survive. The brooch is well-preserved findspot, although the edges are a little 'nibbled' away with a certain amount of bright green 'bronze disease' visible. The brooch is pierced by eight rivet holes which probably held a missing pin attachment. The obtuse angles are both eroded away but the edge of one rivet hole in each of the two angles is still visible (making eight in all). The brooch is divided by plain ribbons arranged in a saltire into four diamond-shaped compar…

A fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy saucer brooch. No original edges survive. Part of the animal-inspired chip-carved Style I ornament is visible within a broad curving outer border. There is a mask with two eyes and a conjoined relief brow and nose and moustache, next to a leg; this combination is also found on a saucer brooch from Cassington, Oxfordshire (Dickinson 2002, fig. 11a). A raised inner border surrounds a radial relief inner zone of which very little survives.

An annular copper-alloy object, 37 mm in diameter and slightly oval in cross-section. On one face the ring is decorated with three equally-spaced areas of transverse segments comprising transverse grooves, and with plain areas between. On the other face the grooves are continuous right around the circumference. The object is in good condition and is patinated dark green. This is likely to be the frame of an annular brooch dating to the 7th century AD. These frequently have alternating zones of transverse ribbing and undecorated areas and tend to be of these slender proportions. E…

The find has been treated with abrasives and now has coppery surfaces.

A small brooch in the form of a bird, of 6th century date and probable Frankish origin. The bird has a prominent curving beak, a triangular tail and a pair of legs. A fin-like projection on its back, with seven ribs, may be intended to represent a wing. The eye is formed by a circular recess which may originally have held a stone or bead. The tail has a triangular area filled with white enamel. The front of the brooch is gilded, almost all of which survives. The tail, legs and beak are each further delineated using a grooved line. The back of the brooch is not gilded. The catch plate …

The head and bow from a small square-headed brooch. The bow has a central ridge with narrower parallel ridges on either side. The head plate has a raised three-sided strip which encloses a panel with raised decoration. This appears to contain two sub-oval shapes but this is unclear, apparently due too poor casting rather than wear.

A brooch consisting of head plate and foot plate, connected by a rounded bow. The semi-circular head plate has three conical projections, each with extensive grooves on its face. The lozenge-shaped foot plate has a single conical extension, also with grooves. The bow also has extensive grooves on its face. On the back is the remains of an iron pin; the catchplate is only partially preserved. The grey colour of the brooch suggests a high tin content.

A copper alloy ansate brooch of Weetch's type XII.Ai, Domburg type. It has the identical expanded terminals that characterise ansate brooches. The arched bow is D-shaped in cross-section and has an incised cross on its flat apex, with four oblique lines forming a discontinuous lozenge around it. On the slopes of the bow are four ring-and-dot motifs, one pair above and one pair below the cross. The terminals flare and are decorated with longitudinal, slightly radiating grooves. The end of each terminal has a central undecorated rectangular projection, giving the trefoil end characteris…

Two very worn and joining fragments of an early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) saucer brooch. The sloping rim is completely missing. The brooch has a central circular boss with a relief pentagon around it. Around this is a raised area with several (originally five) sunken ovals or ellipses. While the condition of the brooch makes certainty impossible, these ellipses are likely to represent highly devolved animal decoration, perhaps related to the 'seven running legs' type (Dickinson 1993, p. 26, figs 62-65). Around the ellipses is a double circle which forms a frame. On the back is the …

The head-plate of an early medieval copper-alloy brooch, of 5th or 6th century date and probably of continental origin. The brooch has a frilled or lobed outline with six small round holes on each face, each now filled with iron. The brooch has a hinge on the back and retains a fragment of a narrow bow. No other decoration is visible. Barrie Ager kndly comments: It seems most likely that the head-plate is from a continental form of radiate-headed brooch with a semi-circular head on which the five radiating knobs have become reduced to rounded lobes. A fair comparison can be draw…

An Early Anglo-Saxon gilded copper-alloy saucer brooch, complete save for the missing iron pin, and with slight probable plough damage to the rim. The brooch has a central domed flat-topped circular boss with two concentric circular ridges around it. A broad field outside is infilled with geometricised zoomorphic relief decoration in Salin's Style I. A profile head can clearly be seen, looking right with open pointed jaws and a rounded brow. A triple-strand body block is behind the head, and an element which crosses this may be intended as a foreleg. There is probably a second animal …

The brooch is otherwise complete, save for the missing iron pin. The brooch has a central domed flat-topped circular boss surrounded by two concentric circular ridges. The edge of the brooch has two further concentric ridges and a flared undecorated rim. The field between is infilled with relief zoomorphic decoration of simplified and geometricised Salin's Style I. An Early Medieval gilded copper alloy round-headed or equal-ended plate brooch. Both ends appear to be triangular and are decorated with faces. Most of the catchplate end is missing. Barrie Ager kindly comments: This is an example of an unusual equal-armed type with concave-sided, triangular arms, which has very few early Anglo-Saxon parallels as yet, although it is too early to be a continental ansate brooch. A 6th-century date does indeed seem likely on the basis of the Style I decoration. The type comes mainly from Kent, the Isle of Wight (IOW-A71E22) and Wessex and there is a v…
