Possible fragment of a cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform or square headed brooch. The fragment consists of a truncated rectangular or square panel defined by a raised strip, with a smaller panel inside. From the panel are integral two loops. The narrow width of the outer edge of each loop may suggest that these are zoomorphic bird's heads. The loops. The loops are decorated with multiple applications of small crescentic stamps and have a groove running down the length of the wider part. The length is 20.9mm, the width is 32.8mm, thickness is 2.2mm and the weight i…

Cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon small-long brooch. The head-plate is a cruciform around a central square, with T-shaped arms defined by circular holes between the arms. Along the edges of each of the arm is a worn raised notched border. The upper arm terminates with an incomplete ring. There may also have been rings on the side arms, but they are truncated. The arched bow is carinated at the front and concave behind and has faceted corners. Above and below the bow is a rectangular moulding, with two grooves at the top and three at the bottom. The foot originates in a fl…

Copper alloy and silver Brooch. Disc Brooch. Slightly concavo-convex silver disc decorated with five circular compartments of interlocking compass-drawn decoration, attached by four silver rivets of diameter 1.4mm and length 2.5mm to a similarly concavo-convex cast copper alloy disc. Each strand of interlace bears an off-centre incised line, probably to emphasise its course; the rivets are sunk between these lines where they intersect. A central countersunk hole of about 2mm diameter appears integral to the facing, and perhaps to both elements. Diagonal tooling or polishing marks ap…

Brooch fragment made from copper alloy, possibly a fragment of a small ansate brooch. A thin straight bow bends towards the putative centre, with a hinge or catch plate stub on the reverse. Decoration appears to be crudely chip carved, though this impression may result from corrosion. There are also horizontal bands and one vertical strip of an off- white material which may be degraded enamel. If the identification of the object as from an ansate brooch is not sustained, an alternative Roman date may be considered. Ansate brooches are Frankish in origin and used on the Continent from …

A fragment of a cast lead Early Medieval Anglo Saxon cruciform brooch. The fragment consists of part of the foot. Either side of which are lappets, originally in the form of eagle's heads. At the lower end of the fragment is a moulding representing the brow with ridges above the eyes on the foot. Behind the foot is the remains of the catchplate, which has been turned over, apparently for use. A feature of the brooch that cannot be understood is the material that fills the recessed lines on the face of this object. This is mid-green and purple in colour and seems soft. It has been su…

A fragment of a copper-alloy early-medieval trefoil brooch. One arm survives, with relief decoration of a spiral at the rounded end of the arm, some single-strand interlace in the centre, and a less clear motif (perhaps a face or an animal) closest to the centre. There is an incomplete small circular perforation at the broken end, as well as a small projection which represents the remains of one of the other arms of the brooch. On the reverse it has a double perforated pin lug at the rounded end. The surviving length is 31.0mm, the width is 17.4mm, the thickness is 1.7mm and the we…

Copper alloy. Cast fragment from head of a little small long brooch of cross potent form; the stub of the plate holding pin survives on the back of the brooch. A heavy brown patina covers the display face, while a paler coating on the reverse might suggest former presence and limited survival of mineral-preserved organic material. Traces of bright metal are exposed in the angles of cross head, apparently from cleaning or investigation. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 450-550. Length (along brooch): 19.22mm, Width: 24.11mm, Thickness (at pin plate): 5.02mm, Weight: 6.45gms.

Lozenge-shaped strip brooch made from gilded silver. It has 8th-century Mercian-style chip-carved decoration showing a central profile animal within a spiral and enmeshed in interlace. It is perforated at one end, and this led to an original identification as a book mount. Since then, several brooches of Weetch's type 31.C have been found with rivets or perforations at one end to allow the attachment of a separate pin or catch (e.g. SUR-47F8A7, PUBLIC-C5F154, CAM-A4DEEE, BUC-4D849D) and this seems the most likely identification in this case. Compare HAMP-CEBED7, which has a very simil…

Anglo-Saxon disc shaped brooch with raised centre, radiating groups of lines and ring-dots. Good traces of silvering. 2 attachments on back. This brooch was identified by Rosie Weetch as an example of her Type 24, a type of lead-alloy brooch which is normally found in London, with several from the Cheapside Hoard. It is perhaps closer to her Type 14, as it is made from copper alloy and has no peripheral bosses. It was originally recorded as 6th century, but both Type 14 and Type 24 date to the 11th century.

Cruciform brooch, pin missing. Helen Geake writes: The image linked to this record shows a small-long brooch rather than a cruciform. It isn't clear whether the image is correct and the brooch has been recorded wrongly, or whether the wrong image has been linked. To enable a searcher to find this record whether they are looking for cruciforms or small-longs, the entry in the classification field has been changed from 'cruciform' to 'cruciform or small long'.
