Cast copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon brooch with identical triangular terminals, one a head and one a foot, both flat, undecorated and triangular with the apexes towards the bow. The long side edges of the head and foot are slightly incurved, the top and bottom (the bases of the triangles) slightly outcurved. The bow is relatively wide, triangular in cross-section in the centre and has a short rectangular-section panel at both top and bottom, creating a pair of small triangular facets at either end. On the reverse of each terminal is a narrow longitudinal projection, one (probably the catchp…

An almost complete copper-alloy early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch dating to the 5th or 6th century AD. The headplate is rectangular and measures 22mm in length and 21mm in width. The front of the headplate is decorated with a slightly raised central panel and a pair of wings which slope slightly to their edges, the best-preserved of which is decorated with a border groove. The side knobs are missing but a full-round integrally cast top knob survives, with a base decorated with a fine groove, a broader groove forming the waist, and a dome also decorated with a fine groove. There is a …

Near complete cast copper alloy small-long brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date, c.450-550AD. The brooch consists of a rectangular headplate with an arched bow which terminates in a slightly flared foot. The headplate is decorated along the side and top edges with at least 19 surviving double-annulet stamps. Most of the stamps are incomplete, so that the effect is of a double crescent. On the reverse of the headplate is a rounded pin bar lug with faint deposit of iron at the head, marking where the spring and pin were once attached. The bow is C-shaped in side view and has a rectangula…

Near-complete cast copper-alloy small-long brooch of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date, c.450-550 AD. The brooch consists of a curved bow with a winged head and splayed foot. The head and the foot of the brooch are flat in profile with a central c-shaped curve where the bow meets the head. The head is square in shape with three curved winged projections. On the reverse of the brooch are the complete catchplate and a knob of decayed iron which sits on the reverse of the head marking where the spring and pin were attached. These are now missing. …

Near-complete cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of Early Anglo-Saxon date, c.500-600. The brooch consists of a rectangular head plate with an arched bow which terminates in a rounded zoomorphic foot. The headplate has three integral half-round side knobs, and the very faint remains of two lines suggesting that the plate was once slightly faceted on either side to give a central panel and two wings. The bow is c-shaped in profile and is decorated with a grooved band before and after its curved apex. The lower foot shows the very faint remains of a stylised zoomorphic head represent…

Probably a cast copper alloy ansate brooch dating from the early medieval period, that is c. 8th-9th century. The brooch is sturdy and almost complete with only the hinge mechanism and the pin missing. The brooch is very angular, looking as if it was shaped from a thick strip of bronze. The surface is very worn and the cast decoration difficult to read. It looks as if the brooch was gilt. The cast decoration is the same on each arm and consists of a cross with bent arms, while there was possible a four-petalled flower on top of the bow. The underside is plain with two lugs remaining o…

Early medieval gilded cast copper alloy brooch with remains of iron pin fastening on the reverse. Dating from the 8th century, the mount is in fair condition with some gilding, now rather flakey, still present in the crevices of the chip-carved decoration. While the brooch appears to be lozenge-shaped this is likely to be a result of damage to its edges and it it probable that it was circular. A plain cross divides the decorated face into four equal fields, each containing a panel of deeply cut, non-zoomorphic interlace. In the centre is a circular, plain area, through which is an iro…

This item was originally identified as a fragment of late Iron Age torc, but seems more likely (from the photograph) to be a large separately cast side knob from a cruciform brooch headplate. The description originally said that the object was made from copper alloy and iron, with the surface possibly silvered or tinned. It was described as 'concave copper with an iron insert tab in the middle'. The single photograph is unclear, but it appears to have a flat, slightly flaring attachment tab projecting from the base. The base is decorated with two grooves which divide it into thr…
