Middle Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy ansate brooch of 8th- or 9th-century date. The bow is arched in profile and of 'D' section, composed of four flat semi-globular segments divided by horizontal plain ribs with shorter ones each end. There is a rusty stain from the iron pin that hinged from one lug to the catch plate at the foot. Length 40.5mm, Width 8.3mm, Thickness 10.8mm, Weight 8.3g. This brooch is probably of English manufacture, but the type is originally Frankish/Merovingian. It is of Hubener (1972) Gruppe 9. Hubener does not illustrate an exact parallel, but on Abb.20 are …

An incomplete Early Medieval copper-alloy ansate brooch dating from 700-1000 AD. The brooch appears to have been in contact with fire, so many of the details are unclear. The brooch has an angled bow-shaped profile, with a fan-shaped protrusion at either end. There is moulded decoration encirculing the bow at its roundest point. The reverse of the brooch is convex and there are the remains of the catch plate at one end. Similar examples can be seen in Hattatt (2000) p380. The brooch is 41.4mm long, 9.3mm wide, 4.3mm thick and weighs 9.9g.

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval ansate brooch. It is roughly rectangular in shape, with a consistent thin, flat profile. The bow of the brooch is angular rather than curved, and does not thicken towards the centre. Part of the lower terminal with the catch plate, and the central and lower parts of the bow survive. Both breaks are old. The bow appears to have a central rectangular shaped panel, which is decorated with a cross and two dot and circle indentations at the sides. A very small part of the upper bow and the entire lower bow survive, and appear to be of the same…

An Early Medieval cast copper-alloy late early-medieval cloisonné brooch of the late 10th/11th century AD. The brooch consists of a raised trefoil shaped, convex centre plate from which nine equally spaced integral lobes would emerge; a tenth lobe appears to have been broken away. Three of the lobes, at 2. 6 and 10 O'clock are significantly larger than the other (5.5mm in diameter). One of these has a dark blue glass sphere attached to the front and it is probable there were similar spheres on the other two larger lugs what have concave recesses to receive them. .The other three lugs…

Description: Fragment of a small square-headed (or Kentish) square-headed brooch made from gilded silver. Part of the bow and part of the headplate survive; the breaks vary a little, but in general are neither particularly fresh nor particularly old. The central panel of the headplate is decorated with a small rectangular gilded panel consisting of a ridged frame and three surviving short vertical ridges. This is surrounded to its single surviving (left-hand) side by a broad ungilded frame decorated with tiny transverse ribbing; this frame turns at the junction of bow and headplate…

Part of a cast copper alloy disc brooch of Weetch's type 18. About half the brooch survives. The front has recessed (or 'champlevé') panels which carry traces of enamel inlay. These would have formed a cruciform design. On the reverse is a single perforated lug set at a right angle to the direction of the pin, which would have acted as a hinge for the pin, which is now missing. The opposing catchplate would have been located on the missing section of the brooch. This is a variant of a type of brooch well known from the middle or late Anglo-Saxon period; see NMS-ED9EF1, ESS-5E37A1 …

Fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon S-shaped brooch, representing just under half. The object was cast in silver, but most of the gilding has rubbed off. Triangular punch marks decorate the body of the animal and were once filled with niello, now only left in a few punch marks and visible only under magnification. The back still retains the attachment lug for the pin and is otherwise plain. Discussion: S-brooches were popular in the early medieval period, both on the Continent and in England. Here, they are most common in Kent. Dimensions: L 15 mm; W 10 mm max.; Weight 1.3 grams …

Fragment of a copper alloy lozengiform strip brooch. The brooch consists of a flat, stretched-oval bow, decorated with 8 visible punched ring-and-dot motifs running lengthwise down its centre. The remains of a triangular catchplate on survive on the reverse, but the pin is missing. This brooch type (with an oval or lozengiform body and basic integral safety-pin type sprung pin) has been confirmed as early-medieval only in recent years, and some have been published as late as 2000 as Bronze Age 'violin bow' brooches (e.g. Hattatt 2000, 281; refs. 1442, 1385). Anglo-Saxon cast copper alloy button brooch. Button brooches are circular in shape and resemble miniature saucer brooches, although the relationship between these two brooch classes is not clear. This brooch is an example of Avent and Evison Class ii. The brooch is 17mm in diameter, all other measurements are unknown. The brooch is slightly worn, with no gilding on the surface. Button brooches usually have a gilt surface; however there is no trace of gilt on this example. It is most likely that the gilt was lost due to corrosion of the copper alloy base metal; however the brooch ap…

Almost-complete early Anglo-Saxon brooch, now in two halves. It is broken at one end of the bow, but both halves have been recovered. The arms are symmetrical, both being a long triangle in shape, with a rounded knop at each corner. One half is missing the end knop (without an image of the reverse, it is not possible to tell if this is the headplate or the footplate). There is a central ring-and-dot on both headplate and footplate, and a ring-and-dot on each of the knops. Although this looks like an ansate brooch of Thörle's group IIIc, it is more likely to be an early Anglo-Saxon…
