Middle to Late Anglo-Saxon cast copper-alloy disc brooch of Weetch's type 18. The front of the circular plate is decorated with a narrow raised border from which the outlines of four circles project at regular intervals. This leaves the remaining part of the central field as a Anglian cross motif. The depressed areas of the cross and circles may have held enamel (c.f. example from Great Saxham in Evison 1977) but no traces are now visible. The reverse is plain except for a damaged catch. This consisted of two parallel projecting lugs one of which is now missing. The surviving lug was …

Early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch of 5th century date. Unusual form of early Anglo-Saxon copper-alloy supporting-arm brooch, of 5th century date. This is a more developed example of the brooch type, looking superficially like an oak leaf. The headplate - or supporting arm - has two integrally cast lugs on the reverse which would have secured the ends of the now-missing sprung pin. In the centre of the head is a third upwards projection. The head is a wide shallow triangle, tapering to the bow, which is curved in profile and has an upwards-pointing triangular projection to either side. Below is a short straight foot with integrally cast ca…

This fragment of small square headed Anglo Saxon brooch is made in copper alloy with traces of gilding visible. What remains is the bow and the footplate, with the head of the brooch now missing, having been broken off in antiquity. The bow is rectangular in plan, flat behind and is probably incomplete. It has what is presumed to be an old bend where it joins the footplate. The footplate is wider than the bow and subrectangular in plan, tapering towards the terminal, which is now missing. There are the remains of two lobes in the upper angles of the footplate and the reverse of the fo…
