Fragment of an unusual brooch, probably a middle or late Anglo-Saxon rectangular plate brooch and probably made of silver. It consists of a thin plate which flares slightly, with concave sides, from a break to an original squared-off end. The corners at this end are cut off obliquely. It has relief decoration, now perhaps worn. In the centre are two longitudinal raised bands with fine oblique ribbing. Surrounding these, on the three original sides, is a broader and higher raised band with a wide central groove. At the bottom is a wide transverse groove with a raised beaded line in the…

Head and bow from a copper-alloy long brooch, probably a small-long but possibly a cruciform brooch. The headplate is rectangular, 25.5 x 18 mm, and although it does not have the top or side knobs characteristic of the cruciform brooch it does have a very faint hint of a flat central panel and very slightly bevelled side wings. There is no apparent stamping or any other kind of decoration, but the surface is very corroded making certainty impossible. On the reverse of the head is a single broken pin bar lug. The headplate is rather lumpy, especially in the left-hand upper corner, …

Side knob from a cruciform brooch, made of solid copper alloy. It is U-shaped, with one rounded and one straight end, and half-round (but tending to biconvex) in cross-section with a low rounded undecorated reverse and a more steeply rounded front. The front is decorated with a central waist, below which there are two transverse grooves before the straight end; the grooves are worn away in the centre. The straight edge has a groove cut into it for attachment to the headplate, and one end of the iron pin bar which passes right through the knob. Above the central waist is a single t…

Cut-down headplate from a great square-headed brooch, which has had its pin bar lug filed off and two rivet holes added to make it into a mount. It is made of gilded copper alloy and consists of the headplate inner panel and second panel of a Hines group XVI brooch (sub-group a or b). The inner panel consists of two chip-carved squares with a relief border around each one, and a relief vertical line between the two. All of this is enclosed within a double-strand rectangle which separates the inner panel from the second panel. The second panel is a frame of simple two-strand twist i…

Small flat copper-alloy disc brooch, 26 mm in diameter, with nine champlevé cells all filled with decayed enamel which is now a greenish colour, but which may originally have been a variety of colours. In the centre is a large circular cell, and there are four subrectangular cells around, alternating with four small sub-circular cells. When the brooch is held with the pin horizontal, a cross pattern is seen in the raised metal between the cells; there is a large circle in the centre and then each arm ends in a fork around a smaller circle, with the rectangular cells forming the space…

One arm from a worn copper-alloy trefoil brooch, with one broken end and one rounded end. It is decorated on one face with a cast central rib, two V-shaped branching ribs and a raised border; the depressions between the ribs have in some cases penetrated through the metal to leave holes. The reverse is slightly hollowed, with scars from two widely separated pin bar lugs. The breaks are worn and the whole object is corroded to a rough brown with patches of green surface patina. Trefoil brooches are a Viking object type, and the decoration on this one is derived from Carolingian plant…

Fragment of head from a small-long brooch, made of thin copper alloy. Part of the headplate survives, with a straight upper edge; all other edges are broken and there is no surviving decoration. Projecting from the upper edge is a large mushroom-shaped flat "knob", 13 mm wide. Two rectangular cut-outs form a narrowed waist, across which is a double groove. The rest of the "knob" is semi-circular, and the curved edge has a border of six to seven worn double-crescent stamps. On the reverse is a pin bar lug blocked with iron corrosion. The break down one side is very fresh; the brea…

Head and bow from a small-long brooch. The headplate is rectangular, 26 x 20 mm, and is highly decorated. Around the edge is a border of large unworn double-chevron stamps, and projecting upwards from the upper end of the bow is a small, fairly high, trapezoidal raised panel. In the middle of this is a drilled dot and two concentric rings, and around are four more smaller dots with faint traces of a ring around each. On the reverse of the headplate is a single pin bar lug with some iron corrosion. There is a small moulding across the junction of the bow and the raised panel; the b…

Fragment of lead-alloy nummular brooch. Just a tiny scrap of the edge survives, with relief decoration consisting of a border of ladder pattern, an inner border of pellets, and an inner field of geometrically intersecting straight lines. On the reverse is a transverse pin lug. These brooches are so called because they are ultimately derived from coins; the borders are imitating the filigree settings that were added to coins to make the originals. The fragment measures 22 x 13 mm; the brooch would originally have been about 40 mm in diameter.

A copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon disc brooch, worn but complete. This brooch is circular and measures 25mm in diameter. The front face has sunken areas (probably originally enamelled) in the form of a human head and shoulders, so is clearly a worn example of a Heiligenfibel or saints' brooch. The human head and shoulders are meant to depict a saint with a halo. Similar brooches have been found in Barham, Suffolk and Paderborn, Germany and are dated to the 9th century (West 1995, 6 and 119, fig 3, no 6). On the back face, which is flat, the remains of the pin lug and pin catch can still be s…

An incomplete early Anglo Saxon copper alloy cruciform brooch. The head plate and bow of this brooch survive. The head plate is narrow, measuring 11mm in width and is almost the same breadth as the bow, which measures 9mm in width. No side knobs survive, although the top knob remains in place. The bow is 21mm in length and incomplete due to an old break. On the back face behind the head plate a mass of corroded iron can be seen, this is likely to be the remains of the pin and pin attachment. A similar brooch has been found from Snottisham, Suffolk (West 1995, 244, Fig 126, No 6).…

A fragment of an Early Anglo Saxon brooch. Only the bow of this brooch survives, the rest is missing due to old breaks. The front face of the bow is convex and back concave, it measures 17mm in length and 10mm in width. It is decorated on its front face with incised circles, each one consisting of two concentric incisions, these circles form rows either side of the central longdituinal ridge and near to either longdituinal edge. Due to its size it is perhaps most likely that this bow is that of a small long brooch although with so little remaining it is impossible to be sure.

The copper alloy knob from an early Anglo-Saxon brooch, most likely to be from the top of a cruciform brooch. This knob measures 13mm in length and 8mm in width. It is waisted in its centre and has two decorative circumference grooves at its terminal end. There is an iron rod running through the centre of the knob which would have attached it to the brooch.

A fragment of an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform or small-long brooch made from copper alloy. Only the head plate of this brooch survives, with the rest missing due to old breaks. A longitudinal groove near to each edge can be seen, but no other decoration is visible. On the back face the remains of the pin attachment with corroded iron, probably derived from the pin, can be seen.
