An incomplete, gilded cast copper-alloy imitation of a Kentish 'keystone garnet' disc brooch of c. 6th-century date. The brooch has lost its pin and has suffered some removals from its edge. It is the size of an Avent (1975) Class 2 brooch, while bearing the more simple ornament of the smaller Class 1. The central raised setting is a simple circle (Dia.: 8.1mm) (Avent (1975, 81; Fig. 8) Type 1.1), now empty. At the cardinal points are four triangular keystone settings with their points inwards (Avent (1975, 80; Fig. 5, Type 5.1). All four contain fragments of what is probably red g

A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. It is plausible that there would have been a similar opposing arrangement, but the artefact has now broken. The object widens from c. 5.1mm at the break to a maximum width of c. 7.5mm. It the tapers to a width of c. 4.2mm before the terminal (max. W.: 9.8mm). There is a perforati…

The brooch has a semi-circular head-plate with three flat semi-circular knobs. The head is decorated with ring-and-dot motifs: three on the semi-circular headplate, with a further ring-and-dot in each knob. The reverse of the head-plate has the corroded remains of an iron pin across much of its width, either side of an incomplete integrally cast lug. The bow is short, wide, thick and sub-oval, with a low arch whic…

The brooch is made of an Anglo-Saxon silver penny of the Sovereign type of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), issued in the late 1050s by the moneyer Ægelwerd of London. Although it is difficult to be certain given the secondary treatment, it appears to be struck from the same reverse dies (and possibly the same obverse dies) as an example in the British Museum collection, BMC ii, p. 412, no. 998. The coin has been gilded on the reverse and has been pierced three times so that brooch fittings could be secured to the obverse with rivets. This is part of a growing body of similar fin…

This report concerns a gilt silver coin brooch found at Andover Down in Hampshire in 2008, by Martin Reed, while metal detecting with the landowner's consent. The find was found on cultivated land, 2-3 inches below the surface, and was promptly reported as potential Treasure. The brooch is made from a silver penny of Eadwig (king of all England 955-57, king of Wessex 957-9). The coin is a rare floral variety probably minted in the West Midlands, and must therefore come from the earlier part of Eadwig's reign, before his brother Eadmund became king of Mercia in 957. Weight: 1.03gDie ax…

A cast copper-alloy equal-armed brooch of early-medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) date (c. 6th century AD), incomplete only in that it is missing its pin. The flat arms are of slightly different lengths (17.1 and 13.9mm) making the brooch not strictly equal armed. They are broadly T shaped, with the rounded wide ends adjoining the bow (W.: c. 16.0mm). The long elements both taper to terminate in fine knops. Each knop begins with a triple ridge, formed through two incised lines, before a waisted section, before the rounded knop. The faceted bow that joins the arms curves in a shallowly rais…

A fragment from an early-medieval (mid 5th- to 6th-century Anglo-Saxon) small square-headed brooch. The piece is cast in copper alloy and gilded, and consists of the head-plate and upper bow. The head-plate is now sub-rectangular as a result of abrasions to its edges. Within a wide plain open rectangular border in relief is a series of vertical ridges (billets) delineated by incised lines, itself within a low rectangular border.
