Complete Early Medieval penannular brooch, Fowler type G. The hoop is circular with exterior diameter 27.36mm and interior diameter 18.29mm. The hoop face has moulded ribbed decoration while the reverse is plain. The terminals are cuboid with faceted sides and measure 6.74mm wide x 5.4mm thick. Each terminal has a lozenge shape on the face, containing a central dot. The pin is complete and remains moveable. It measures 33.95mm long x 2.02mm thick. It is bent outwards, probably through use. The pin appears to be made from a different alloy to the hoop and was therefore possibly a r…

Part of a copper alloy circular brooch which is Early Medieval in date. The brooch is a flat disc with a raised ropework rim. The front of the disc and the rim is gilt. It is broken and the surviving fragment is 18.3mm long, 12.9mm wide and 5.8mm thick. There is a hole in the centre of the disc through which fits a small copper alloy and undecorated rivet which has also survived. The reverse of the disc is plain copper alloy with a dark brown patina. A double pin lug survives but not the pin. The brooch probably dates from the Early Anglo-Saxon period.

Scandinavian copper alloy disc brooch. The brooch is decorated with an openwork Jellinge-style design of an interlacing animal (see NMS-7446E3 and ESS-4D7A85 for other examples of this style). On the reverse there are the remains of the pin lug and catchplate. The pin is missing. There is also part of the suspension loop which the wearer could have passed a chain through to wear the brooch as a pendant. Jane Kershaw has identified this as Scandinavian - a Jellinge-style disc brooch, Jansson Type I A1 (Jansson in Arwidsson1984; Kershaw 2009). There is a close parallel from Cambridge…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy applied saucer brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. Only the baseplase, central stud, and pin fittings remain. The baseplate is circular, but with minor chipping to the edges. The baseplate is very slightly concave. The stud is roughly hour-glass shaped, with a flat top and flat base. The top is 7.27mm in diameter and the stud 9mm in height from base to top. A small shank on the base of the stud fits through a perforation in the baseplate and has been possibly soldered to the base plate, though corrosion obscures this. Extending to either side of the stud …

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is flat and rectangular in section, with the width of the ring measuring 9.53mm. There is a rectangular perforation to take a pin, now lost. However, the perforation retains iron corrosion and measures 4.9mm x 2.3mm. The brooch is decorated on its display face. Every 90 degrees, a band runs transversely across the brooch, defined by two incised lines to either side, so that there is a broad central band and two narrower flanking bands. The pin hole is placed in the centre of one of these broad central ba…

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is flat and rectangular in section, with the width of the ring measuring 8.78mm. There is a pin restriction to take a pin, now lost. However, the restriction retains some iron corrosion. The crossbar measures 2.85mm wide and 3mm in length. It is inset from the outer edge by approximately 3mm and inset from the inner edge ny 1.5mm. Corrosion in the area of the pin restriction makes these measurements tentative, however. There is also limited iron corrsion on the brooch opposite the pin restriction, includi…

A cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period, dating to the mid 6th century. The brooch is nearly complete, missing only the pin, though the top and base are corroed in situ in the pin fitting and catchplate, respectively. Some textile may also be preserved by the iron corrosion of the pin between the pin and the underside of the head plate. The brooch can be separated into three primary elements which will be described in turn: the headplate, the bow, and the foot. For purposes of description, the brooch is oriented with the headplate at the top. The headpla…

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch fragment of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is flat and rectangular in section, though the upper face is slightly convex. Approximately half of the original brooch remains. There is some corrosion on the upper and lower faces, but the punched ring-and-dot decoration along the outer edges of the upper face are still clearly visible. The underside is plain and heavily corroded. There is no evidence as to whether or not this brooch had a perforation to take a pin or a pin restriction. The brooch has an outside diameter of approximate…

One quarter of the brooch is bent at a 45 degree angle from the frame, with a small stress fracture visible at the bend, and another stress fracture is visible on the inside of the hoop separating the remaining brooch into two halves. The upper and lower faces have suffered from some corrosion, though the most important features remain intact. TREASURE CASE : 2007 T445. Viking-period hacksilver fragment from the terminal of an Irish type of brooch. Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the fragment of over 90%, with copper, gold and lead. The find comprises an irregular, four-sided fragment of cast plate which has been cut from the terminal of a bossed penannular brooch; length, 20 mm. There are remains of incised decoration including half of a plain roundel to one side, enclosed by a plain, divided frame that projects from one point on the circumference…

Fragment of a copper alloy annular brooch of the Early Medieval period. The shape of the object suggests that it is approximately half of the original brooch, corrosion and wear having caused it to break. One break shows iron corrosion, suggesting that the brooch was damaged where the pin had caused corrosion. What remains of the brooch is also badly damaged. There are a number of splits in the metal of the band and the metal is slightly bent in places. Despite the breakage, it is possible to measure the diameter of the brooch, as it would have been complete, the diameter of…
