A lead alloy probable brooch fragment which is probably from the mid Early Medieval period. The fragment is a sub rectangular flat plate with one end rounded, and the other end broken with the majority of the brooch missing. The fragment is divided into two panels by a transverse raised bar. There seems to be a plain border round each panel, and interlace patterns within. The reverse is plain and flat apart from two lugs at the rounded end. These were probably originally pierced to hold the pin bar, but are now corroded and the bar and pin are missing. It is probably part of a middle S…

Possible cast lead alloy (pewter?) disc brooch of early medieval (later Anglo Saxon / 9th -10th Century) date (800-1000 AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to the large amounts of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. If the artefact is a brooch it would have originally been circular, however due to abrasion and plough damage, it is now more oval or sub-rectangular in plan and is slightly domed in profile. It measures 28.9mm length, 21.2mm width is a maximum of 3.4mm thick, and wei…

A lead alloy disc brooch, with just under half obliquely bent onto the reverse obscuring the flattened remains of the lug and catch-plate. The cast decoration consists of a double-edged cross with expanded equal arms within a billeted border, there are uncertain motifs in the angles and a rounded boss in the centre and at the ends of the arms. Diameter 31mm. 10th century. Extremely close to a fragmentary brooch from Grimston (HER 32100; Rogerson and Ashley 2009, 567-568; fig. 9.44) and another complete brooch, probably from Mildenhall, Suffolk (Wilson 1964, 156-7, pl. XXVI).

A possible, incomplete cast lead alloy (pewter?), disc brooch of Weetch type 5 and early medieval date (10th century AD). There is some debate as to whether this is actually part of a brooch or possibly a post medieval lead token; due to significant areas of damage it is impossible to be certain of the identification. However, it is the recorders assessment that the diagnostic elements of design and potential fittings on the reverse suggest that this is a brooch. A cast lead alloy Anglo-Saxon button brooch dating from AD 450-550. The brooch has a distinct face mask on the front. The rim of the brooch is now crished and distorted, while the reverse retains only the two projections for the pin and the catchplate. There is no trace of the pin or any corrosion or staining that may have been associated with an iron or copper pin. Although there are many examples of Anglo-Saxon brooches in lead, such as disc brooches, this is only the second button brooch in lead recorded on the database (the other being KENT-156313). The surviving part measures 39 x 23mm and the original diameter was probably c. 39mm. It measures 7mm in height and weighs 7.6g. The brooch has a stepped profile, with a narrow flanged beaded border. The inner ring is linked to the centre by two surviving spoke-like ribs, the intersections being marked by pellets. Early Medieval (Anglo-Saxon) lead alloy disc brooch, 29mm long, 27mm wide and 2mm thick. The object is in fair condition and weighs 8.5grams. The object represents about a quarter of a circular brooch, including its catchplate which is 3mm thick. Its surface is decorated with a series of five concentric circles which surround a raised cross and pellets. The reverse has the now squashed remnants of two fixing loops/lugs aligned and right angles to the edge. The object is very similar to examples from Coppergate in York, particularly 10602, fig 1268, page 2573, YAT17/14.

Just a tiny scrap of the edge survives, with relief decoration consisting of a border of ladder pattern, an inner border of pellets, and an inner field of geometrically intersecting straight lines. Anglo-Scandinavian lead alloy plate brooch, rectangular with remains of an iron pin in a single transverse pin lug and catchplate. Rather indistinct moulded decoration within a frame appears as a saltire with a central boss set on a lozenge and smaller bosses nearer the corners. Details on a much better preserved lead alloy brooch excavated at Thetford suggest that the decoration is probably zoomorphic and in the Borre style (Youngs, S. in Wallis 2004, 38-40, fig. 35 SF437). 30.5 x 24.5mm. Thickness of plate 1.5 - 2mm. 10th century.

An incomplete cast lead alloy object, possibly a fragment of a brooch dating from the early Early Medieval period (AD 400 - 600). The brooch is possibly a small square-headed type, but this identification is uncertain due to the fragmentary nature of the object. The fragment is roughly rectangular in plan with two original edges at a right angle, forming the outer edge of the object, and two broken edges. It is slightly bent and distorted, this was probably caused when it was broken. The front face of the object has relief decoration consisting of three equally spaced lines running pe…

An incomplete, lead-alloy, late Anglo-Saxon, or Anglo-Scandinavian, disc brooch. The brooch is circular and is slightly domed on its front and concave on the reverse. The front is decorated with relief moulding, consisting of a circumference of raised pellets and a non-geometric design within it. The area of the central design is subject to a large amount of white, powdery corrosion, probably due to the deterioration of the tin content of the alloy (commonly referred to as 'tin pest'), and is difficult to interpret. On the back of the brooch, the integrally-moulded catch plate surv…

Lead alloy possible brooch. A small lightly concavo-convex plate, of probably originally discoid form, with a moulded design comprising a plain cross whose arms are rendered by quadruple strands, with a large central pellet and with a pellet and ring in each of its angles. Further smaller pellets and curls also appear between these major elements. A small stub on one side of the back may represent pin gear, otherwise lost. Patinated. Lead alloy possible brooch fragment. A small part of a flat cast disc brooch, perhaps approaching 40mm in its original diameter, with a double lined outer border confining a design including a pellet and an associated petal or loop, possibly part of a more extensive interlace design. A cast lead alloy disc brooch of early medieval / late Anglo Saxon date (c.10th century AD). The brooch is crudely made and sub circular, 35mm in diameter and decorated with three or four roughly concentric rings of pellets, surrounding a central group which may be interpretable as a quincunx. The reverse has a flattened looped catchplate on one side and, on the other, a pair of holes which may be a mounting point for a now lost spring and pin.
