A copper alloy Early Medieval domed disc brooch. The brooch has a diameter of 26.1mm and is 8.5mm thick. It has a plain border and a design in relief of a Jellinge-style animal with interlace. On the reverse the double pin lug and catchplate survive, and there is another projecting lug which is too corroded to see if it was pierced. The pin does not survive. The brooch is in very good condition and has a deep green patina with lighter areas of slight corrosion. The brooch probably dates from the later part of the Early Medieval period; 850 - 1066 AD. Jane Kershaw has identified thi…

Original identification (with the object type 'Personal Ornament'): Copper-alloy pendant, possibly of a 'Thor's Hammer' type. The object comprises a flat-sectioned, axe-shaped pendant. There is a perforation with iron inclusions at the top of the narrow 'axe base', this being the area located behind the flared edge of the axehead. The face is decorated with semicircles with dots in the centre. The reverse is not decorated. Helen Geake writes: An alternative identification for this object is that it is the repaired foot of a small-long brooch. The foot may have broken off, been ti…

Cast copper alloy brooch, probably the incomplete terminal of a cruciform brooch. The object comprises a zoomorphic terminal showing a stylised snout and eyes. Coming up from this terminal are two broken tags showing probable moulded bands of ridge and pellet decoration. Moving further up the central body of the brooch terminal are two further broken tags, one of which is more extended; this is right-angled in plan, and may once have connected to the tag below it, creating an openwork motif on the brooch.

A fragment of an Anglo-Saxon long Brooch, consisting of the curved bow, with part of what is probably the catchplate on the reverse. It consists of a roughly rectangular plate (4.6mm thick) curved in section and broken at both ends. Each end has a flat panel and there is a fragment of flat footplate or headplate at one end. This has a ridge on the reverse, right next to the start of the bow, which is a more common place to find a catchplate; this would identify the flat area as part of the footplate. Decoration on the bow consists of a simple horizontal ridge and two horizontal dividi…

A cast copper alloy knop from a 6th Century Anglo-Saxon brooch. Only the single knop survives. The knop is D-shaped in profile and has become detached from the main body of the brooch. The profile of the knop is very elaborate. It is formed from a double collar, which then tapers inwards, before tapering out again into a cone, the cone then terminates with a collar. There is a central circular perforation through the centre of the knop. The fragment is worn and is a pitted mid brownish-green colour. Similar brooch knops can be seen in West et al, 1998, p90 and p240, fig: 122, 7-11.

A fragment of a cast copper alloy annular brooch of early medieval date. Approximately one eighth of the brooch frame survives. The pin is missing. The frame appears to have been circular, with a flat section. Both breaks are worn. There is a large lump of iron corrosion on one surface which could be the result of a post-depositional process, or it could have been part of the brooch. The metal is a dark jade green colour and is worn.

Above the eyebrows is a pair of deep and obliquely set eye sockets into which are inserted rods of silver with expanded ends which form staring eyes. The central axis …

A cast copper alloy small-long brooch, dating to the 5th or 6th century (c. 450-550 AD). The brooch has a flat head plate, with three semi-circular lobed extensions. These extensions are undecorated and although the brooch is badly corroded and some of the surface has been lost, what remains has a smooth, shiny patina. The brooch is broken at the beginnings of the arch of the bow, the break is worn. The break has resulted in the loss of the bow and foot. On the reverse of the head there is a small, broken central pierced loop. There is corrosion around the loop. Similar to an example…

A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon animal head terminal, probably from a cruciform brooch, that has possibly been reused as a strap fitting. The piece is a stylised horse's head, widening along its length with slightly protuding nostrils and much more marked protuding eyes. The piece narrows above the eyes, and has a raised transverse collar, separating the head terminal from the next panel. Most of this panel has broken off, but there is evidence of a circular perforation that may be an attachment hole indicating reuse of the terminal as a strap end.
