Late Saxon lead disc brooch of Weetch's type 5, with single transverse pin lug and catchplate on reverse. Six concentric circles of pellets surround a central motif. Diameter 39mm. Thickness c.1.5mm. Weighing 20.68g. A.B.Marsden's (8/5/07) comments: The brooch's design can be described as broadly nummular rather then explicitly so. There is no legend. Indeed, most of the decorated face of the brooch is taken up with the raised circular borders surrounding the central device; these are of alternating form, four being plain circles, the other three being constructed of pellets. The c…

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch fragment of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is flat and rectangular in section, though the upper face is slightly convex. Approximately half of the original brooch remains. There is some corrosion on the upper and lower faces, but the punched ring-and-dot decoration along the outer edges of the upper face are still clearly visible. The underside is plain and heavily corroded. There is no evidence as to whether or not this brooch had a perforation to take a pin or a pin restriction. The brooch has an outside diameter of approximate…

A cast copper-alloy annular brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period. The brooch is nearly complete, with a small section missing. One quarter of the brooch is bent at a 45 degree angle from the frame, with a small stress fracture visible at the bend, and another stress fracture is visible on the inside of the hoop separating the remaining brooch into two halves. The upper and lower faces have suffered from some corrosion, though the most important features remain intact. A cast copper-alloy cruciform brooch of the Anglo-Saxon period, dating to the mid 6th century. The brooch is nearly complete, missing only the pin, though the tip and base are corroded in situ in the catchplate and hinge fitting, respectively. Some textile may also be preserved by the iron corrosion of the pin between the pin and the underside of the head plate. The brooch can be separated into three primary elements which will be described in turn: the headplate, the bow, and the foot. For purposes of description, the brooch is oriented with the headplate at the top. The headpl…

Incomplete Early Saxon small-long brooch, lower bow and footplate missing, in battered condition, old breaks but a little recent minor damage. All edges of the headplate are missing, but there is a suggestion in the present shape of cut-outs at the corners, both of the upper ones marked by an oblique V-section notch or short groove. There are four round, cast perforations in the headplate, countersunk from the front face, the lower two blocked by iron corrosion deriving from the spring. At the top of the D-section bow a rectangular panel forms facets. probably of Leeds' (1945) cross p…
