A complete but worn copper alloy detachable knob probably from an Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, perhaps from the side rather than top of the brooch. The knob has a terminal end that is semi-circular in section with an exterior surface that appears to have triangular faceting. Beneath the terminal the knob is waisted with a slight groove above and below. The attachment end is circular in shape and has a single incised groove that runs circumferentially around the outer face. The underside of the knob is flat and has a slot accross one end. The entire object is pierced by a central circu…

An incomplete gilded copper-alloy nummular brooch of late early-medieval date (11th century AD). Perhaps two-thirds of the artefact survives, bent; only a limited section of the circumference is extant. This is effectively a repoussé disc brooch, decorated unifacially with a design raised up from below. The design is that of a crowned, bearded and ?draped bust facing right, with a sceptre to the right, all within a beaded border. Between the border and the surviving circumference are the letters '?EDAA?', with a faint beaded border towards the circumference. The brooch seems to be im…

The foot of a copper-alloy Anglo-Saxon florid cruciform brooch. A short section from the base of the foot survives, including an elaborate Style I human-head terminal. The remainder of the brooch is missing due to old breaks. The foot is slightly convex in section, although it does not have a prominent central ridge, and the terminal has a flat back with central concave triangular recess and moulded front face. The front face of the foot, probably the nose of a horse's head, is separated into two distinct trapezoidal fields that have borders composed of double moulded lines separated…

Late early-medieval cast Borre-style disc brooch. Decoration of concave-sided lozenge with each of the four corners extended to form interlaced, double-contoured knots. In the centre is a sunken circular field. Around the damaged edge is a plain raised border. The decoration is worn, as on most recorded examples. On the reverse is a rectangular scar from the missing catch-plate or pin lug and a small probably accidental perforation at the opposite edge. However, there is no trace of the corresponding element for securing the pin. This brooch is of a type commonly found in East Anglia,…

It has a central vertical ridge with a circular boss in the middle. Chip carved decoration is present on either side of the central ridge though corrosion and dirt obscure the details of the pattern which is in Anglo Saxon Style I animal art style. There are traces of gilding at the top and bottom of the fragment on the front. There appears to be a repair in one corner of the fragment. A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. It is plausible that there would have been a similar opposing arrangement, but the artefact has now broken. The object widens from c. 5.1mm at the break to a maximum width of c. 7.5mm. It the tapers to a width of c. 4.2mm before the terminal (max. W.: 9.8mm). There is a perforati…
