A copper alloy Early Medieval button brooch, with surface gilding. The brooch is circular and has a raised lip around the circumference. The decoration is in the form of a stylised male face with moustache. The nose / moustache divides the surface into four areas: two wider side areas containing two concentric semicircular lines and an inner dot (possibly representing eyes), an area enclosed by a semi-circular shape with a central dot (possibly representing a mouth) and a smaller area containing one curved line. On the reverse the brooch is flat apart from the worn remains of a lug fo…

A worn, damaged Early Medieval copper alloy, saucer brooch, decorated with seven raised spirals around a central boss. Parts of the upturned edge of the saucer do survive, and although no gilding is detectable, there are traces of a white material in the hollows of the pattern. Two small, bar shaped scars show where the pin fittings were placed. Similar brooches are catalogued in MacGregor & Bollick, who suggest a 5th - 6th date for these. This brooch was found on two separate days by two detectorists, the second, two years after the first! This first half [left in the image], was rec…

Two very worn and joining fragments of an early medieval (early Anglo-Saxon) saucer brooch. The sloping rim is completely missing. The brooch has a central circular boss with a relief pentagon around it. Around this is a raised area with several (originally five) sunken ovals or ellipses. While the condition of the brooch makes certainty impossible, these ellipses are likely to represent highly devolved animal decoration, perhaps related to the 'seven running legs' type (Dickinson 1993, p. 26, figs 62-65). Around the ellipses is a double circle which forms a frame. On the back is the …
