A cast copper alloy Anglo-Saxon saucer brooch dating from the 5th to 6th centuries AD. The brooch has an internal pattern of five running spirals around a central ring and dot design, all enclosed within a narrow circumferential border. The brooch has an integrally cast pin hinge and catch plate, and although the pin is missing, the lump of iron corrosion on the reverse indicates that the pin was made of iron. This was common practice. The rim of the saucer brooch is angular. Originally the brooch would have been gilded, but no trace of this survives on this example.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy saucer brooch of Early-Medieval/Anglo-Saxon date. The brooch is missing most of its outer circumference and its entire angled rim; stylistically, the brooch is decorated with a raised central boss surrounded by an irregular circle, further enclosed by a five-pointed star formed of double concaved arcs and a border of three concentric circles with a wavy/ zig-zag band between the outer two. All of this decoration is gilded. Only a small area of the outer rim band survives, and this has been drilled from front-to-back, probably to enable the broken brooch…

Six raised concentric circles enclose the central design. The third, fourth and fifth circles (from the centre) are interrupted by two opposing scroll based designs, likely to be stylised zoomorphs.
