The headplate has integrally cast top and side knobs; each knob is half-round in cross-section, and slightly hollowed on the reverse, with a broad groove across it. Fragment of gilded copper-alloy plate, almost certainly part of a headplate from an early Anglo-Saxon great square-headed brooch. The headplate would originally have been roughly rectangular, and covered with relief decoration. What survives consists of an incomplete central rectangular panel containing possible ‘basket weave’ (alternating groups of horizontal and vertical lines), surrounded by a double border and enclosed by another (incomplete) rectangular panel again with basket weave decoration. Around this is a narrow border with regularly spaced (c. 6.5mm apart) groups of …

Fragment of gilded copper-alloy headplate from an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch, dating to the second half of the 6th century. What remains of the probably originally rectangular head-plate consists of part of a central trapezoidal panel (wider at the base) with part of a lower, possibly rectangular, wing to the left. Running across the top of the central panel is a 3 mm wide raised band, and a small area of relief decoration (possibly the eyes of a face-mask) above that. There is a double pin bar lug on the reverse, with a little iron staining around from the pin or bar. The…

Side knob from an early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch. The knob was cast separately, and is semi-circular in cross-section, with a hollow concave reverse and domed front. The edge that would have been next to the headplate is straight, and there is a wide groove across the knob just above this. The main part of the knob is rounded in outline and there is a less distinct groove and then a small plain extension at the end. Part of the iron bar which held the knob in place on the brooch plate survives, visible in the depression on the reverse, and broken off at the base. This bar wou…
