A fragment of a cast copper alloy penannular brooch, probably dating to the sub-Roman, early Medieval period (5th to 7th Centuries AD). Approximately 25% of the brooch is present and consists of one terminal and part of the hoop. The other terminal, pin and remaining part of the hoop are missing, presumably lost in antiquity. The break present on the hoop contains soil and is not recent in nature. The hoop has a sub square cross section. The underside of the brooch is plain, but the upper surface exhibits a series of small V-shaped notches along the edge of the hoop toward…

Fragment from the foot of a cruciform brooch of early Anglo-Saxon date. The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly D-shaped in cross-section. The upper face is decorated with a cast design of a horse's head. It consists of two cast transverse ridges, below which are two very large and bulbous pellets (eyes) set in slight depressions, which create the effect of a brow above. Beneath the eyes are two longitudinal grooves which emphasise the centre of the long nose. The lower break is very worn, to the point of seeming original, whereas the upper break is less worn and more irre…

An unidentified fragment from a decorative piece of metalwork probably late Roman - Medieval in date (200 - 1400 AD). The fragment is broadly sub-rectangular in shape and D shaped in cross section. The upper surface is decorated with a central bar with a large swollen knop at its centre. At the upper edge of the artefact this bar joins a horizontal one to form a T shaped. At the edges of the artefact similar bars extend. The two short edges are both broken, one relatively recently the other has some age. The reveres face has a concave shaped depression at the centre of the piece. It i…

A copper alloy penannular brooch (Fowler type G) of post Roman / early early medieval date (AD 450-650). The brooch is broadly oval in plan and flat in profile. The two terminals face one another forming a penannular (C shape). The body of the brooch is a flattened oval shape in section (width 4.2mm thickness 3.3mm) and is decorated with cast and incised transverse lines on only the upper face; the lower is smooth and undecorated. The two opposing terminals are irregularly cast cuboids with the removal of the corners creating a polyhedral effect. There is no evidence of applied or inc…

Fragment from the lower part of a probable cruciform brooch of early early-medieval date. The upper part of the brooch is lost and the break is relatively worn but patinated with a similar coloured surface to that of the rest of the brooch. All that survives is a fragment of foot, with a catchplate on the reverse. It is broadly sub-rectangular. From the upper and lower parts of the long edges small flat plain D-shaped side knops or lappets extend, giving an 'I' shape. Above the upper lappets is a tiny fragment of arched bow. Just below the break, betwe…
