A fragment of a possible early Anglo-Saxon cruciform brooch for which no published parallel could be found. The fragment consists of a large oval shaped solid full round knob with a smaller circular top knop projecting from its top. This knob is unusual and is decorated with two transverse grooves across its centre. There is a circular double transverse moulding at the base of the knob and then a rectangular plate, this is narrow and its lower edge is incomplete due to an old break and its long sides appear to be complete, indicating that if this is a brooch head it did not have win…

A fragment of a cast copper-alloy square headed brooch head, John Hines has commented that the fragment is an interesting and relatively important piece. It's a fragment of the headplate of a group IX great square-headed brooch: not a very populous group but of considerable importance in the genealogy of Great Square Headed Brooch design in East Anglia (Hines pers comm 2008). The fragment is very worn with pale green active corrosive products. Measuring 36.66mm by 33.25mm in size. The front face is decorated with a central stylised possible horse-head, with bulbous eyes, surround…

A silver gilt fragment of a footplate of a square headed brooch. The fragment is incomplete at its top and bottom edges, where the rest of the footplate would have continued originally, due to old breaks, which are now worn. The fragment is roughly lozenge shaped and the front face decorated with an intricate chip carved design consisting of a central lozenge, two opposing terminals of which are complete and rounded in shape. There is a quatrefoil with spiral terminals within the lozenge shape and surrounding the lozenge there are rope-like or plaited motifs. The back face appears und…

An incomplete copper alloy brooch of Early-Medieval date, probably from an Anglo-Saxon small-long brooch of fifth to seventh century date. The brooch consists of a fragmentary head plate that may have been square in shape although one side is now lost due to an old break, and the other is damaged and partly folded. At the left hand side of the plate is the remains of a row of punched crescent-shaped decoration. Similar decoration is perhaps present at the top of the head plate, although this is unclear. The bow is 17.72mm in length and 10.21mm in width, sharply curved and with no decor…

Silver pin, formed from a 1.7mm diameter wire which tapers to a broken point at one end. The head is coiled twice and then flattened at the front to form a 3.2mm wide strip, which survives as 8mm long but might originally have been longer - it is not clear whether this is an abraded break or a true end, though the taper in profile suggests this is the original form. The main shaft has some small bends but was probably originally straight. Brooch pin Silver pin from a late Saxon ninth century disc brooch. Slightly warped and with minor cracking visible under magnification, but ot…
