The foot from an early-medieval small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD). The foot is expanded, with five sides. It is asymmetrical, with the left side when the foot is lowermost longer and wider. Above the foot the leg is as narrow as 6mm before flaring to 24.25mm at the foot. At the other end the bow curves upwards before a break. On the lower side of the leg is a slightly abraded, perpendicular catchplate (14.9 x 5.25 x 2mm). An incomplete, gilded cast copper-alloy imitation of a Kentish 'keystone garnet' disc brooch of c. 6th-century date. The brooch has lost its pin and has suffered some removals from its edge. It is the size of an Avent (1975) Class 2 brooch, while bearing the more simple ornament of the smaller Class 1. Perhaps two-thirds of the artefact survives, bent; only a limited section of the circumference is extant. A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. The brooch is made of an Anglo-Saxon silver penny of the Sovereign type of Edward the Confessor (1042-66), issued in the late 1050s by the moneyer Ægelwerd of London. Although it is difficult to be certain given the secondary treatment, it appears to be struck from the same reverse dies (and possibly the same obverse dies) as an example in the British Museum collection, BMC ii, p. 412, no. 998. This report concerns a gilt silver coin brooch found at Andover Down in Hampshire in 2008, by Martin Reed, while metal detecting with the landowner's consent. The find was found on cultivated land, 2-3 inches below the surface, and was promptly reported as potential Treasure. The brooch is made from a silver penny of Eadwig (king of all England 955-57, king of Wessex 957-9).
