Fragment of Early Saxon gilt great square-headed brooch, footplate inner panel and frame, in very abraded condition, no part of original edge surviving. Within the inner panel a motif that appears to be a pair of conjoined figure-of-eights is probably a pair of S-shapes characteristic of Hines’ (1997) Group XV. >22 x >19mm. 6th century.

Middle or late Anglo-Saxon ansate brooch. The flattened D-sectioned bow and arms are decorated with transverse ribs. Those at the terminals and in the centre of the bow are decorated with longitudinal notches, and those at both ends of the bow are plain. The separate catchplate and pin lug are missing, represented by sub-square patches of solder. 44 x 9.5mm. Weetch allocated this brooch to her type X.C, with parallel sides and bulging edges. Broadly similar to examples from Norwich (EAA 68, 14-5, fig. 9 no. 2) and London ((Pritchard in Vince (ed.) 1991, 143-4, fig. 3.23 no. 95). HÃ…

Late Saxon lead disc brooch of Weetch's type 5, with single transverse pin lug and catchplate on reverse. Six concentric circles of pellets surround a central motif. Diameter 39mm. Thickness c.1.5mm. Weighing 20.68g. A.B.Marsden's (8/5/07) comments: The brooch's design can be described as broadly nummular rather then explicitly so. There is no legend. Indeed, most of the decorated face of the brooch is taken up with the raised circular borders surrounding the central device; these are of alternating form, four being plain circles, the other three being constructed of pellets. The c…

Incomplete Early Saxon small-long brooch, lower bow and footplate missing, in battered condition, old breaks but a little recent minor damage. All edges of the headplate are missing, but there is a suggestion in the present shape of cut-outs at the corners, both of the upper ones marked by an oblique V-section notch or short groove. There are four round, cast perforations in the headplate, countersunk from the front face, the lower two blocked by iron corrosion deriving from the spring. At the top of the D-section bow a rectangular panel forms facets. probably of Leeds' (1945) cross p…

Late early-medieval cast copper alloy convex disc brooch of Jansson type II A. Very worn. Traces of Borre-style decoration are visible comprising three cat-like animal heads facing into the centre of the brooch separated by the lobes of a trefoil. On the reverse are the remains of a pin-lug and catch-plate set parallel to the outside edge of the brooch. A large lump of iron corrosion around the pin-lug indicates that this brooch was fastened with an iron pin. Maximum diameter (excluding corrosion): 23mm. Weight: 5.35g. Late early-medieval cast Borre-style disc brooch, very corroded purplish metal with approximately half of the outer edge missing. Much of the decoration is damaged or obscured by corrosion. However, enough survives to show that it comprised a concave-sided lozenge with each of the four corners extended to form interlaced knots. In the centre is a sunken circular field. The pin-lug is missing from the reverse on which a broken transverse catch-plate remains. There are no traces of a pin on the reverse of the brooch. Maximum diameter: >29mm. Weight: 4.52g.
