The foot from an early-medieval small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD). The foot is expanded, with five sides. It is asymmetrical, with the left side when the foot is lowermost longer and wider. Above the foot the leg is as narrow as 6mm before flaring to 24.25mm at the foot. At the other end the bow curves upwards before a break. On the lower side of the leg is a slightly abraded, perpendicular catchplate (14.9 x 5.25 x 2mm). Viewing the brooch in profile one can see that the foot is bent upwards compared to the leg, most so on its left side. The upper surface of the brooch is d…

An incomplete, gilded cast copper-alloy imitation of a Kentish 'keystone garnet' disc brooch of c. 6th-century date. The brooch has lost its pin and has suffered some removals from its edge. It is the size of an Avent (1975) Class 2 brooch, while bearing the more simple ornament of the smaller Class 1. The central raised setting is a simple circle (Dia.: 8.1mm) (Avent (1975, 81; Fig. 8) Type 1.1), now empty. At the cardinal points are four triangular keystone settings with their points inwards (Avent (1975, 80; Fig. 5, Type 5.1). All four contain fragments of what is probably red g

The very worn and abraded cast copper-alloy head probably from an early-medieval (Anglo-Saxon) small-long brooch (5th/6th century AD); the other possibility would be an X-form brooch. The head is rectangular (tending towards square), now with rounded corners. Central on one of the longer edges are the vestiges of the bow beginning to travel upwards. There is a possible transverse groove/ridge above this. From the same edge, but on the reverse surface and just off centre, is the highly abraded semi-circular pin lug (max. th.: 9.5mm). This appears to have broken through at the perforat…

An incomplete gilded copper-alloy nummular brooch of late early-medieval date (11th century AD). Perhaps two-thirds of the artefact survives, bent; only a limited section of the circumference is extant. This is effectively a repoussé disc brooch, decorated unifacially with a design raised up from below. The design is that of a crowned, bearded and ?draped bust facing right, with a sceptre to the right, all within a beaded border. Between the border and the surviving circumference are the letters '?EDAA?', with a faint beaded border towards the circumference. The brooch seems to be im…

A bent and slightly corroded incomplete cast copper-alloy artefact: probably a brooch of medieval date, perhaps earlier. The original artefact is assumed to have been annular; around two-thirds now survives. One end appears complete and terminates in a lozenge with a sub-square outward protrusion just before. It is plausible that there would have been a similar opposing arrangement, but the artefact has now broken. The object widens from c. 5.1mm at the break to a maximum width of c. 7.5mm. It the tapers to a width of c. 4.2mm before the terminal (max. W.: 9.8mm). There is a perforati…

A cast copper-alloy button brooch of early-medieval date (Avent and Evison Class Aii; 5th - 6th century AD). This example is incomplete in so far as its iron pin has largely been lost to corrosion. The rim is upturned (H.: 3.1mm) and very slightly flared. The upper surface is decorated with a central moulded anthropomorphic face-mask viewed straight on within a border. The helmet is formed a pair of curves that meet at a point. Above are parallel curves which extend from the border at both ends. Echoing them are three nicks in the border uppermost. The eyebrows and nose are formed of …

An incomplete cast copper alloy Early Medieval Anglo Saxon small long brooch; 500-600 AD. The head is a cruciform around a central square head-plate, with double transverse incised lines between the central plate, the wings, top knop and bow. The square head-plate is 6.5mm wide. One wing and the top knop are complete, the other wing has half lost to an old break. All are integrally cast and half rounded in section with a flat back and convex front. The complete wing is 8.2mm long and the top knop 10.3mm; both have a broad transverse rib across the front about a third of the way along t…

An incomplete early-medieval (5th-century) brooch, best classified as a radiate-headed brooch. This incomplete brooch is cast in copper alloy, with traces of an iron pin. The brooch has a semi-circular head-plate with three flat semi-circular knobs. The head is decorated with ring-and-dot motifs: three on the semi-circular headplate, with a further ring-and-dot in each knob. The reverse of the head-plate has the corroded remains of an iron pin across much of its width, either side of an incomplete integrally cast lug. The bow is short, wide, thick and sub-oval, with a low arch whic…

A worn and incomplete early Anglo-Saxon gilded copper-alloy saucer brooch, which has perhaps been reused as a mount or pendant. The brooch is circular, with a rough reverse that has the worn-away remains of a catchplate near a jagged broken edge. The front of the brooch is decorated with concentric rings; the centre is a plain raised disc within a larger flat disc. The has a double grooved ring border. The next concentric ring contains twelve running spirals, which is enclosed in a final outer incised ring border. The front has many patches of gilding. Opposite the broken edge is a…

A damaged and incomplete early-medieval (mid 5th- to 6th-century Anglo-Saxon) cast copper-alloy small-long brooch. It has a trefoilate head-plate, comprising a central square with semicircular arms on three sides. On the upper surface there are pairs of incisions delineating the recesses between the arms and the central plate. The pin lug has been lost on the lower surface. An off-centre hole (Dia.: 2.5mm) is presumably a repair: a means by which a replacement pin could be attached, perhaps through a ring or an ad hoc lug. One of the arms has been bent downwards slightly and there is …
