The sole of a cowhide leather shoe dating to the third century AD or later. The surviving shoe comprises a single well-preserved sole layer. This is the uppermost insole, the layer that the foot made contact with. There is slight damage on the inner edge at the ball of the foot and a small tear at the outer back side of the heel. The back portion of the seat is dried in a folded position. The sole was designed to be worn on the left foot. It has a swayed shoe, tapering evenly from the tread down to the seat. There is no indentation at the seat. The toe is quite pointed, tapering for c…

Roman (c. AD 43 to c. 410) leather shoe or boot sole with iron hobnails: The sole of the shoe or boot is comprised of a leather outer sole, which faces the ground, a leather central sole (a lamina), and then a thin leather inner sole, all of which are incomplete, fragile as the leather is now dry and cracked. Overall, when viewed from the outer sole, the shoe is a sub-oval in plan with one lateral edge being slightly concave and the other convex suggesting it was worn on the left foot. The heels edges are incomplete on the outer sole, but missing from the centre and inner sole. The ou…

An incomplete cowhide shoe, possibly a military boot dating to the late second or early third century AD. The shoe has been designed to be worn on the left foot. The shoe is swayed and very pointed. The toe turns noticeably inward. The toe is very pointed and tapers to the tread of the foot. The waist and seat are almost straight, with little variation in width. A single line of studs runs around the outer edge of the shoe, with four straight lines in the tread down to the waist. There is a single line in the waist towards the outer edge, but otherwise the waist is open and free of st…

An incomplete cowhide leather sandal dating to first half of the third century AD. The sole of the sandal survives with two thick sole layers held together by iron studs. Intended for wear on the left foot, it has a large flat toe box and rounded heel. It possesses a swayed shoe shape, which is narrowest in the waist (centre of foot, under arch). The toe is flat across the top with a slight protrusion at the big toe. The cut for the thong of the sandal is still present in the upper part of the insole. This would have held the thong to the shoe and supported the foot over the toes and …

An incomplete cowhide leather shoe with iron hobnails and some associated goatskin fragments dating to the late second or early third century AD. The shoe was designed to be worn on the right foot. The shoe is swayed with a rounded toe and pronounced outer side of the tread at the ball of the foot. The waist and seat are narrow, tapering evenly to the back of the shoe. Some uppers remain around the edges of the shoe, but not enough to discern the original shoe type. The heel stiffener is typical of closed Roman shoes of many types. The studs are very small and in a highly decorative p…

The remaining insitu coins rested on a distinct black organic patch c. 20cm by 15cm on top of this layer. They were at several different angles but in distinct rows or groups, possibly from being arranged in rows or falling that way naturally within a loose bag. The organic material was unstructured and was interpreted as possibly decayed leather rather than a more fiberous material such as wood.
