The central circular perforation has a maximum diameter of 7.9mm. The surfaces are damaged by pitting resulting from corrosion and the edges are particularly damaged. Helen Geake, Finds Adviser of the Portable Antiquities Scheme writes: “Dating of lead whorls is difficult. The drop spindle with which they were used continued in use until the end of the Medieval period in London and Winchester (Egan, 1998, “The M…

A complete circular cast lead object, possibly a spindle whorl or other weight. The whorl is biconvex, with one surface having received steeper bevelling than the other. The top is flattened and the base is slightly concave. It is basic and has suffered corrosion. It is seemingly undecorated. The artefact has a spindle hole with a diameter of 6.4mm. The spindle whorl is 7.9mm thick and weighs 16.01g. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is suggestive of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5 grams) being used for spinning cotton …

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 32.81 mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 8.32 mm in diameter. Both sides of the whorl are decorated, four regularly spaced circular dots in relief, the other with regular lines that expand at an angle from the central perforation to the edge. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184).
