Object type: SPINDLE WHORL
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Shropshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead spindle whorl, dating from the Medieval - Post Medieval period, between AD 1400 - 1600 (diameter: 25.5mm; thickness: 8mm; weight: 26.4g). This spindle whorl is circular in plan and bi-conical in section with a central circular drilled hole (diameter of hole: 8.5mm) for the probable wooden spindle to run through. The artefact appears to be faintly decorated on both sides with possible linear and pellet decoration, although the artefact is too worn to identify this clearly. The spindle whorl is in a worn and poor condition.

Medieval weight; Cast lead weight of bell shape: The weight is essentially a circular cone, although it flares out towards the bottom and is flattened at the top. It has a curved suspension loop at the top, formed from a strap of lead, and is pierced in the centre of the base. The weight looks to have been reshaped after casting, although this is difficult to determine as it is also somewhat pitted and gouged across its surface. The lead has a white patina, of varying thickness. Height 41.3mm, width (“diameter”) 33.4mm, weight 185.3g Lead weights are difficult to date due the…

An incomplete cast lead tablet, possibly a form of seal matrix. Probably Medieval (c. AD 1200 - c. AD 1400). Length 19.0mm, width 16.1mm and 2.4mm thick. Weight 4.87g. In plan, the object has parallel sides. One end is rounded and the opposite end is straight. The straight end may be the result of an old break. However, due to corrosion it is difficult to decide whether this is a break or whether it is a finished edge which is merely abraded. One face of the tablet has a moulded inscription in three lines, one above the other. It starts at the straight end and ends at the rounded en…
