Piece of jet, irregular but generally flat. Through it has been drilled a 6.3mm diameter hole which burst through on one side causing some of the surface to break away. One face bears parallel scratch marks and two roughly cut grooves suggesting that an attempt had been made to remove the ends making the piece more symmetrical.

Jet bead, of uncertain date. It is sub-circular in plan with a central circular hole. The edges are rounded. Lindsay Allason-Jones of Newcastle University has looked at this item and confirmed that it is jet. However she comments that it is impossible to date a generic bead of this type when found out of context, it could have been made in any time from the Bronze Age onwards.

A small piece of black jet, or jet-like material, recovered and recorded because it is not naturally occurring in the area. Worked flints have also been recovered from the location. The jet is not obviously worked or shaped. It is sub-rectangular in section, and slightly wedge shaped. It leaves a dark brown mark on paper and is not cold to the touch. It is 17.2mm long, 9.1mm wide and 5.3mm thick. 0.62g.

A uniface, lozenge-shaped, artefact with one axis slightly longer than the other, made from jet (or possibly shale), of unknown date. The upper face of the lozenge is decorated with narrow, incised grooves forming an unintelligable design. The design consists of a pair of closely spaced lines, beginning in the angle at one end of the shorter axis. If this angle is considered to be the right hand end of the short axis they then form a horizontal left-hand loop that curves back, passes beneath itself then forms a smaller loop at the upper right side before passing beneath itself again a…

A black, probably jet, bead of either probably of Roman or Victorian date, possibly Late Neolithic or Bronze Age. The fusiform (barrel shaped) bead is circular in section with flat ends and convex centre. Mid-way between the middle and each end is a pair of incised transverse lines running around the bead. A slightly off centre hole has been drilled through. It is 28.1mm long, 15.3mm in diameter at the centre and weighs 4.26 grams. The hole is 3.8mm internally and one end and 3.0mm at the other. It is not facetted which suggests it was lathe turned rather than pared which would ind…

An incomplete shale object of uncertain date and function. It is made from Jurassic shale, unpolished. It is triangular in plan, the upper and lower surfaces are flat, and the upper surface has bevelled edges. One apex is pointed, the other two are rounded. There are two circular indents, 12 mm diameter, intersecting the edges of the triangle, where either discs have been removed, or holes bored. It is possible this object is a waste product from the manufacture of other artefacts. There is a flake missing from the upper surface in one corner. The object is 59 mm long, 51 mm wide o…

Jet bead fragment. About one third of a spherical bead with a drilled stringing hole of diameter 2.2mm; a chip near this may be ancient damage though others are recent. Faint turning lines appear on the surface; this may suggest manufacture on a lathe, implying a Roman or later date. However, prehistoric objects were sometimes shaped by rotation in a hollow in a larger stone which could produce similar surface markings. The Early Bronze Age saw the use of jet, though beads were not necessarily made in such regular forms as appears here. Suggested date: Unknown, Roman to Medieval, 43-1…

The object is a dark brown/black colour.  The object measures 32.8 mm in length, 19.1 mm in width, 9.7 mm in width and weighs 4.1 grams.  Parallels could be made with a Roman spindle whorl recorded on the database discovered in Northumberland (NCL-A25482) also an E…

A complete opaque black glass or jet bead of unknown exact date. The object is spherical in form with a central drill hole running throughout. there are a few light scratches on the outer surface and no other distinguishing marks. Comparable examples recorded on the PAS database range in date from the Roman period through to the Post Medieval period. Without a secure context it is difficult to date beads, such as this, more accurately. Overall dimensions: 8.69mm in length, 10.48mm in diameter and 1.41g in weight.

There is no visible decoration on the outer face of the surviving half. A central hole has been drilled through each end of the bead. Dimensions: 30mm in length, 16mm in width, 9mm thick, 2.50g The object not facetted which suggests it was lathe turned rather than pared which would indicate a later, Victorian or Roman, date.

Unworked piece of Jet. The piece is roughly trapezoid in plan and rectangular in cross-section. The edges and fractures are very worn and smooth suggesting that it has been a piece collected off the Lincolnshire coast, which lies only a few miles to the east. Although the piece is unworked the field in which it was discovered has also produced evidence for Roman occupation. Since Jet was used as a material for beads and bracelets it was thought best to record this piece incase more evidence arises.
