A hoard of nineteen incomplete and fragmentary gold items of Middle Bronze Age date: 1. Bar torc (part) of triangular cross section, with simple hooked terminal. It is roughly and loosely coiled and irregularly twisted. The torc was originally untwisted and penannular in shape, the twisting and distortion to its shape occurred at the time of coiling, probably shortly before final deposition. Length 560mm. Triangular cross section, sides 3.9mm. Weight 53.92g. NB - 6 is part of this torc giving a total length (circumference) of 700mm (equivalent to a diameter of c. 223mm) and weight of …

Bronze age gold ring, Diameter 14x12.5mm. Diameter of rod 3mm. Weight 4.39 grams. Small gold ring comprising a length of round-sectioned gold rod; the plain, flat terminals meet (but not perfectly). While this object belongs broadly to the class of Bronze Age penannular rings, it has more in common with the Middle Bronze Age type which includes composite rings than with the later Bronze Age series. Simple rings of plain round-sectioned rod have been found in association with Middle Bronze Age composite rings in North East Norfolk (G Varndell in Treasure Annual Report 2004) and in the …

CORONER'S REPORT Description A late Bronze Age penannular gold ring of oval cross-section. The piece originally had alternate stripes of yellow and paler gold although this is now barely visible except internally where the surface is less worn. Measurement of specific gravity indicated that it comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Composition Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of a very worn striped penannular ring indicated for the yellow stripes a gold content of 79-83% , a silver content of 13-17%, the remainder being copper. The gold…

A gold Bronze age bracelet. In its current form, this is a roughly annular band with a small overlap. One end is a slightly thickened terminal of thin crescentic shape, the other is a thin, wavy edge most likely the product of the reworking of a broken end. It can be assumed that the original form was a penannular bracelet with two matching thickened terminals and a broad gently C-shaped band section, which survives in the reworked form. Remodelling after the loss of one terminal involved pulling the two ends together to overlap and tying them together with a thread (not surviving) pa…

A Bronze age strip of sheet gold which long, cigar shaped with squared off terminals. At either end is a set of three small perforations set in a triangle. These are roughly circular piercings with evidence for rotational action in their formation; the tiny lips of metal pushed through to the reverse have been crudely doubled back and flattened. There is no evidence for decoration. The strip has many transverse creases consistent with it having been rolled up and crushed flat (see above circumstances). The main additional damage is a repeating pattern of rounded hammer dents of varied…

Small penannular gold ring of sub-circular section with decorative narrow banding in yellow and paler gold; corrosion of the silver-rich stripes has caused blackening in places. The external surfaces are patchily worn. The gap is bridged by green corrosion products probably deriving from a base metal core. External diameter 14mm-15mm; internal diameter circa 7mm; breadth 4.5mm; width of gap circa 2mm; weight 4.13 grams. Composition Surface analysis indicated gold and silver contents od approx. 57% and 40% respectively. Identification A well known Late Bronze Age type, d…

Small, plain penannular gold ring of flattened oval cross section; the ends taper slightly to flat terminals. Examination in the laboratory indicated that the object has a base metal core. External diameter 15.5x14mm; internal diameter 4.5mm; breadth 6mm; weight 6.18 grams. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface of penannular ring from 'Havant area', Hampshire, indicated a gold content of 76 - 79 %, silver content of 16 - 18 %, the remainder being copper. The ring weighs 6.18 grams and the specific gravity measurement of 9 indicates that it has a base metal core.

Penannular gold ring with hoop of circular cross-section; original decorative banding in broad stripes of yellow and paler gold are very worn and best perceptible near inner surface. Roughness of gold at one terminal could be due to damage. The surface is heavily worn; scores and scrapes are likely to have occurred post-depositionally. Visual inspection suggests that the piece comprises a gold covering over a base metal core. Diameter 18-18.5mm; internal diameter 6.5mm; breadth 6.5mm; weight 9.51 grams. Short length of distorted gold rod of approximately circular cross-section. Both ends appear to have been cut using a chisel. Diameter of rod 5mm; weight 3.21g. Non-destructive X-ray fluorescence analysis of the surface indicated a gold content of approximately 55-58%, a silver content of approximately 40-44% and a copper content of more than 1%. Possibly a distorted solid penannular ring, the diameter of which would have been approximately 13mm. Should this be the case, the piece could fit morphologically into the category of Bronze Age penannular rings. These are generally date…

Report to H M Coroner on find of potential Treasure from Radway, Warwickshire. 2005 T552 Small gold penannular ring with traces of decorative banding in close-set narrow stripes, which would originally have shown as bands of yellow and paler gold. The alternate stripes of softer metal are somewhat eroded and the banded effect is now difficult to see with the naked eye. The piece is worn, especially around the circumference. Closer inspection in the laboratory showed that the ring is solid, and has complex three-tone striping; this is analogous to a ring in the British Museum collect…

CORONOR'S REPORT Gold bronze age bracelet Description Fragment of one end of a hollow gold bracelet; the terminal has a cap which was made separately. The piece was made from thick sheet gold rolled into a tube, now crushed. The piece appears to be the missing end of a bracelet reported earlier (2006 T34; see analysis results) and published in Treasure Annual Report 2005/6 (pp 19, Fig. 11). This was suggested to be of possible Middle to Later Bronze Age date, from circa 1300BC, although it is unusual in being hollow. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object conta…

A small penannular ring of sheet gold construction, with simple terminals separated by a narrow gap. The sheet strip has been carefully folded over, to give an oval shaped cross-section, the internal edges around the interior diameter being separated by a gap of 1-1.5mm. The ring has been dinted, with a compression crimp in one place causing a small tear. This ring finds parallel with both penannular gold rings and 'hair-rings' of the Middle and Late Bronze Age (1400-800BC), which are now generally thought to be either hair or ear adornments. CORONER'S REPORT Description of object 1. Twisted gold penannular gold bracelet fragment. The bracelet is made on a rectangular-sectioned (4.1mm x 3.1mm) bar and has a plain unexpanded terminal. The edges and corners of the terminal are sub-rounded. The bracelet is twisted, giving the body of the bracelet a (concave-sided) lozenge-shaped profile. The bracelet has a comparatively loose twist (of 180 degrees on the fragment) and approximately one-third of the original length is represented. The break would appear to have been cut through a little over half the thickness and bent o…
